Is Daniel Tupou the new Shaun Kenny-Dowall?
Over the years, the on-field antics of the great Shaun Kenny-Dowall have perplexed Roosters fans and non-Roosters fans alike. For years he was the only player in the NRL that could break 8 tackles and run 60 metres to score, and then on his very next touch drop the ball cold with no opposition player in sight. It was both highly frustrating and highly amusing at times for us Roosters fans. Having an "SKD moment" became a common analogy used to describe making an unfathomable error. However, under Trent Robinson, we have all seen a remarkable improvement in his game. His 2014 season was very good, and in 2015 he has arguably been our best back apart from Tuivasa-Sheck.
Daniel Tupou has become the "new" SKD. After today's awful performance (yes, i know many of our players were poor today), Tupou clearly shows that he does not have a brain cell in his head. How the hell does one catch the ball in the field of play and run back into the in-goal to be tackled? Why does he attempt to catch opposition bombs on our 20m line that the opposition could not possibly score off? Why does he continue to run high into tackles only to be forced backwards 10 metres? Why does the look on his face scream "i couldn't give a f*ck, i don't want to be here"? I have no doubt Robbo sees this and probably tells him this same sh*t every day at training, but Tupou just doesn't seem smart enough to work it out.
Now that we have lost Maloney and RTS, we are the favourites to re-sign him. Do we seriously want to? I'd much rather we move Fergo to fullback and give Mitchell some time on the wing before transitioning into the fullback role. Or possibly sign Brett Stewart for 2 years until Mitchell is ready. Even when SKD was at his worst, his effort and love for the Red, White and Blue could never be called into question. Tupou just doesn't seem to have that same heart.
Any thoughts on what we should do with this obviously-talented but frustratingly-unintelligent winger?
