Kurt Gidley still has plenty in the tank as he approaches 15th NRL season with the Knights

KURT Gidley says he won’t play a day longer than he should and is not the type to “beg” for an extra year, but is not contemplating retirement just yet as he approaches his 15th season in the NRL.

On the eve of Newcastle’s season-opener against the Warriors, the Knights skipper opened up for the first time about how he questioned his own future at the club midway through last season when he was playing hooker under Wayne Bennett, describing it as the lowest point of his career.

But following his return to his favoured fullback spot and with an incident-free pre-season under his belt, the 32-year-old admits his appetite for playing has never been greater.

“I’m as pumped about this game as I have been about any during my career,” Gidley said of the Warriors clash.

“The excitement’s there, the anticipation — you just want to get out and play and we’ve got some real confidence around the place about doing well.

“It feels no different for me now than when I first started.”

While Gidley is aware his future will be a talking point this season, he doesn’t want to be the focus of constant speculation.

“It’s not about me, it’s about the club. Always has been,” Gidley said.

“I’ll never stay here any longer than I should. I’m not a player who will hang around and beg for an extra year.

“I’m also aware of the young guys we’ve got coming through that are off contract.

“The guys the club has to do everything to try and keep here.“The Mata’utia boys, Jake Mamo, Gags (Dane Gagai) — I love those guys.

“They are everything that Newcastle is about.

“I don’t want to see those guys go to another club.

“We want them to be Newcastle Knights for their whole careers so we need to sign them all and that’s the priority.”

Asked if that meant there was no money left for him, Gidley said:

“That’s fine. I’ve had a great career.

“I’ve grown up in my home town and played for 15 years and had my family watching me play in my home town.

“It’s not about me or being selfish and trying to hang around for another year and I don’t want to hang around for another year if I’m not up to it, either.

“I don’t want to be halfway through 2016 and get a tap on the shoulder from Stoney (coach Rick Stone) telling me I’m not up to it or you are back to reserve grade.

“I’m a hard judge on myself but I expect Matt (Gidley), Hages (Michael Hagan) and Stoney to be honest with me and they will be.

“I know they will be.”

On Stone, Gidley said:

“He brings a relaxed attitude but he still drives very high standards and expects everyone to do what is asked of them.

“If you don’t perform at training or give him your attention, he’s happy to give a spray out or a kick up the arse which is what you want from your head coach.”

On playing hooker:

“It didn’t suit me and it didn’t suit the team.

“It really started affecting me the middle of last year to the point where I was really questioning my future at the club.

“I struggled to see a future here given Darbs (fullback Darius Boyd) was contracted for another year.

“It was affecting me at home and Wayne (Bennett) could sense it as well.

“We ended up having lunch and talking it over and that’s when I was moved to halfback. But fullback is my best position.”

On the fans:

“They weren’t relating to the footy we were playing last season.

“Newcastle is a blue collar, working class town and they expect you to roll up your sleeves and put your body on the line, do your absolute best.

“We won some fans back by playing pretty tough and playing a bit more expansive footy at the back end of the year.

“Now we have to put an early stamp on 2015. Make a statement. It all starts with the Warriors.”

...as much as we all complain about him, you gotta hand it to the bloke...he loves this club. You can really see it in his comments here. You can tell he really wants to do the right thing by the club even if it might not be in his own best interests.

Obviously we need this year to be his last. Nothing against Gids but there comes a time when you need older players to move on so you don't lose the new generation of players coming through.

It sounds like he does still want to play on but I hope he continues to look out for the club's best interests and realises that him staying will send some of our young talent elsewhere.

I think we all needed to read this - that he won't allow nepotism to be to the detriment to the club, and that the future of the club comes first. Also the shots at Bennett were quite good.

Great article!

Not going to lie, I'd absolutely hate it to send him off without a ring. Given how committed he's been to the club, despite how shit the last few seasons have been, he's been nothing short of incredible for us. As much as I want to see Mullen lead the club (especially after his professionalism during the '13 finals), It would suck for us to ditch Gidley as the captain.

He's like Uate this season. f**ked about during the Bennett years and has clearly regressed. Given how he was one of three crucial players in Newcastle being somewhat decent prior to Bennett, I think he deserves the opportunity to play where he's most comfortable and see if he's able to return there. Obviously not being here prior to those years I can't say how I felt about him was how people here felt but I'll stand my ground :p

This article gives me the feeling he's already laid out an option B and has come to terms that it might be best. Really it's a shame we've got such a build up with the priorities coming off contract so soon.

If the blokes coming though the ranks cared half as much about the club as this guy did then we'd already be a top 4 side. His passion for the club is 2nd to none. The fact that he's willing to step aside to accommodate the young stars shows what a star this guy really is.

Good on him for acknowledging re-signing young guys like Mamo & the Mata'utia's should be the priority over getting himself a new contract. It's unfortunate that he had to waste the last few years playing out of position but he'll be a Knights great regardless.

We are getting an insight into how Wayne basically cuts his nose off to spite his face when it comes to team selection. He puts players in the team he wants out of position just so he gets the team sheet he wants. No thought at all given to how a player belongs in a certain position and if they can't be fit it, leave them out. Gids should have played utility or fullback. I feel Kurt is all but certain to be in the ESL next season. A layer of his calibre will be in high demand and being a utility I feel the offers will be flooding in. The English coaches are big fans of utilities. You won't meet a more honest bloke. His family are all like that. Top folks.

It's all about building a team around Darius for Bennett. f**k everybody else. Sign Darius and build rom there. f**ken wierd. It's quite possible we will read a similar article about Milford if he doesn't adjust to the 5/8 role.

For all his derpiness there is no denying his contribution to this club. He has basically held this club together post Andrew Johns.

Mullen's played a massive role there too.

I was all for Scott getting the captaincy due to his leadership skills but after thinking about it, and how much Gidley loves the club, I think the next captain needs to be Mullo without a doubt. I'm not saying anything against Scott's commitment to the club (him making a stand and extending his contract after Bennett left and we were faced with a lot uncertainty re players running for the doors was huge) but the club is Mullo's home and it would be weird if he didn't captain it.

Great article. You don't get many clubman like him anymore. Be a great thing to start building a culture like that for a few more players here. Good luck to him this year. Bring it on!!!!

I think we will see a ripper of a year from our skipper. it is vital he stays fit. He is all stability as far as I am concerned. When he , Mullo or Beau are missing we struggle big time.

Great read. I think Gids feels very confident about this season and wants to see how it plays out before deciding his future.
If he kills it on the field and we are high on the ladder will he think he's got more years in him or will he think "I'll finish here on top"? Who knows.
I've said for a while I think he will go to Super League after this year. He's still got plenty to offer but, as he stated, younger guys coming through have to be priority.
To be honest, I wouldn't mind if he signed again for us for another year or two but only if he was to be used as a utility off the bench, but I doubt that would happen.

No doubting his clubsmanship. He loves the place and wants the best for the club - can't ask for anything more than that at this point. Will be remembered as a great of the club, hopefully he has one good year left in him.
