The Parramatta National Rugby League Club wishes to advise that Jack Afamasaga has won the 2004 Eric Grothe Rookie of the Year award.

Jack will be presented with his trophy by Eric Grothe prior to the First Grade match tonight (Saturday 28 August) against the Penrith Panthers at Parramatta Stadium.

Jack made his First Grade debut against the Wests Tigers in May, and has played a total of 9 NRL matches.

The 20 year old hails from Wellington, NZ and moved to the Club in 2003.

He recently signed a two year contract which will see him at the Club until the end of the 2006 season.

“This is a great honour and something that has taken me by surprise. You only have to look at some of the previous winners to realise what a special award it is,” Afamasaga said.

The Rookie of the Year Award was first presented in 1974 with Geoff Gerard the inaugural winner. Since then, other Rookies of the Year have included Eric Grothe, Neville Glover, and Brett Kenny, along with players from the current squad including Nathan Hindmarsh, Luke Burt, Ashley Graham and Michael Witt.

I thought he was younger than 20, I also thought he re-signed only for one year. He was a shoe in for the award this year, no other rookie was given a reasonable shot at first grade.
