Jake Mullaney's future with Wests uncertain

HE'S been labelled a future star of the Wests Tigers but Kearns' Jake Mullaney is still waiting to hear if he's even in the club's plans for next year.Mullaney's upset family say he has been told to look for another club to join.
But Tigers recruitment manager Warren McDonnell told the Advertiser the club is "still looking at options".
"We haven't decided on our final make-up for next year," McDonnell said.
"Jake hasn't been offered a contract as yet but we're looking at filling those holes."
The former St Gregory's College rugby league captain was the 2009 Wests Tigers Toyota Cup Player Of The Year when he was the leading point scorer in the under 20s competition with 322 points (including 29 tries in 27 matches).
In 2010, he sustained a hamstring injury but this year he's trained with the first grade squad all season, while playing fullback for Balmain Ryde-Eastwood Tigers in the NSW Cup each weekend.
His mother Michelle said it's frustrating not to know the reasons why he hasn't been snapped up by his local team.
"He's always wanted to play for the Tigers," she said.
"At the start of the year Tim Sheens told him he would get a start in first grade.
"He's been in the media talking Jake up but he hasn't given him a go — even with the fullback problems they've had this year."
Mrs Mullaney said other clubs had shown interest including Parramatta and Cronulla.
"We just hope he can get an opportunity," she said. "He'd love to stay but he's realised he's not wanted at Tigers."
Mullaney's grandmother Rosemary Clement attends every Sydney game he plays.
"Everyone always asks me when Jake will be in first grade because the club has said for the past two years how much they rate him.
"But at the end of June his contract was not renewed."
With 2011's first choice fullback Wade McKinnon to play in the English Super League next season, Tim Moltzen signing with St George Illawarra and Mullaney not re-signed, who will be the Tigers fullback in 2012?

If I was Mullaney I'd gettoutathere real quick. Sheens contract extension has killed any hope Mullaney had of cracking into the main squad. Sheens just doesnt rate him.

Dejavue anyone? Gallant / Head.................

Yeah...its a real shame.. He really has talent to burn that kid.. He reminds me of a young Hogdson.

Yep, may as well try his luck elsewhere. I just cant fathom Sheens thinking sometime. He does not seem to rate fulltime specialist props, halfbacks and fullbacks. Multipurpose and speed is his mantra.

Our pack does not cause fear in any opposition side, our backline is slow and we have no organiser in the halves.

He is not good enough.

Another overhyped and overrated reserve grader put on a pedestal by the NSW Cup groupies - Gallant, Trimarchi, Lazarus...

Agreed, as an old Maggies supporter I remember a young Hodgson being a standout as a halfback & fullback, albeit in a very ordinary team. Even as a kid in first grade he was a sensation. Who knows how good Mullaney would be in first grade, we will probably never know as unfortunately Sheens won't give him a run....(IMO he would be a sensation) yet he persists with an inneffective young halfback, week after week after week after week etc etc. Why have the NYC if it's only the forwards that get a go at the Tigers, occasionally?????

Gambler- we will never know. he just doesnt get the opportunity to fail or pass, yet Lui is persisted with despite nearly 2 years of mainly cr#p performance on the field.

FROM THE NRL WEBSITE

Robert Lui’s strong running from halfback continues to create headaches for opponents. Lui has 51 tackle-breaks so far, which ranks him second in his position behind Manly’s Daly Cherry-Evans.

WTF...... I must have missed 48 of those "tackle-breaks"???
I've got to start paying more attention

When it comes to getting an initial opportunity, there is no denying that there is an element of luck involved, especially if you are not an 'exceptional' player who can simply not be overlooked.

Mullaney is not exceptional, unfortunately luck hasn't gone his way, and presently finds himself in limbo. Trust me, if he was good enough and a club wanted him, he would have already signed with one.

Just goes to show that you hate Lui for all the wrong reasons.

Anyone that thinks he is not dangerous running the ball is on another planet. I am pretty sure he has made just as many line break as Benji.

I don't hate him, I just don't rate him and would love to be wrong, and maybe I am????

Sheens either likes you or he dosnt football ability dosnt come into the equation.

You need to give a guy like Mullaney a crack in better class company before writing him off. Other clubs seem to give a small fast fullback ago, Gardiner goes okay for the Sharks. Anyway if I was Jake I would be packing my bags especially now your Mum and Grandmother have doubted the great man

As for Mullaney not being good enough Gambler.... Is a busted McKinnon or Moltzen any good? They suck .so why shouldnt he be given a chance. Sheens also gave the junior burger and slow Bo ryan a go FFS. Anyway the issue here appears to be once again the BS coming from this club. If they dont want him, just tell him

Your right, McKinnon (lately) and Moltzen are nuffies. As I said, Mullaney obviously didn't get any luck.

But my opinion is that he is not really that good anyway, so this is not an occassion where we blame Sheens or the club for letting 'a gun player' go.

Besides, as it stands, I am fairly certain no one wants him...sure he may be picked up and good luck to him.
