Coaching career[edit]

Keighley Cougars[edit]
Demetriou's contract with Wakefield expired at the end of 2010, and he was told that it would not be renewed. He initially joined the York City Knights for 2011, but a subsequent offer as player/coach for Keighley Cougars arose, and was accepted. In his first season in charge, Keighley gained promotion to the Kingstone Press Championship.

Northern Pride[edit]
Demetriou returned to Australia in 2013, becoming the head coach for the Northern Pride in the Queensland Cup. During his two seasons at the Pride, the club won back-to-back minor premierships, the 2014 Queensland Cup Grand Final and the inaugural NRL State Championship game. In 2014, he coached the Queensland Residents side, who defeated the NSW Cup rep side 24–16.

North Queensland Cowboys[edit]
In October 2014, Demetriou joined the North Queensland Cowboys as an assistant coach.[3] On 4 October 2015, Demetriou was a member of the Cowboys' coaching staff in the side's 17–16 Grand Final victory over the Brisbane Broncos.

St George Illawarra Dragons[edit]
In January 2016, Demetriou joined the St George Illawarra Dragons as an assistant coach and as head coach to their NSW Cup feeder team, the Illawarra Cutters.[4] In September 2016, he was named coach of the 2016 Intrust Super Premiership NSW Team of the Year.[5]

Illawarra Cutters

The Illawarra Cutters were 54-12 winners over the Burleigh Bears in their NRL State Championship fixture at ANZ Stadium, Olympic Park on Sunday.

Must be our coach for 2017!

Unlike Mary

This guy has had great success as a coach in both Queensland & NSW at the second tier, as well as in his role of assistant for the Cowboys NRL side.

In contract Mary was woeful as a NSW Cup coach.

How Mary has a future as an NRL level coach is something only a group of imbeciles could contemplate (STG Illawarra board). Clearly, nepotism is alive and well in our club.

Of the rookies floating about he is well placed to get a gig in the NRL in the future.

I think if JD is still with us next year he will end up the first grade coach at some stage . With Mary's coaching style which is based around negativity and mediocrity which is designed basically to save his own arse he will fail .After the first 6 or 8 rounds if the team is playing more " Mary " football he will be sacked . I just hope JD doesn't move on .

Let's give him control of the attack. Mary can set the team strategy (score more points then the opposition) and JD can work with the team on pulling it off through attractive attacking footy like the Cutters played.

Pretty impressive record. The season before he joined the Pride, they finished 7th. The season after he left they finished 6th. Hard to argue he hasn't made a big difference.

The danger is some other club will offer him a lucrative position, and he will be lost. I hope not, but there's not much point playing second fiddle to Mary. It's not like he's learning anything from him.

That's was the plan this year however the drunk one being a control freak didn't listen to anyone other than himself. The drunk one needs to go.

He'll be sacked.
McGregor took our club to the semi finals last year, remember. This year when Demetriou joined our attack went backwards and we missed the finals. Any handpicked Rugby League Performance Committee can see who's to blame. Seeya Jason.

I like the way you think, but no. They've already got rid of Tony Ayoub as coaching team/management scapegoat. Jason D was first reserve scapegoat, and will be required to step up to to the position of full time scapegoat next year.

I believe McGregor game plans hadn't evolved from last year, our spine wasn't able to adjust too different defensive structures, therefore our ability to put points on the board was affected, Players like C Smith, Cooper Cronk, James Maloney and Ennis, were able to have the vision to adjust throughout a game and then put on points at will, it is McGregor lack of sight at half time, as a coach you must have the ability to come up with patterns to suit your team, JD obviously understand this, the cutters performance was tremendous.

Did Saints say last week Mary will be head coach? If so was that head coach of the Cutters or First Grade? They can still swap them around and still come out being honest.

JD looks like he has more than surpassed Mary, Hornby, Young and Price in terms of experience and success. Surely they are not that dumb to pass up on gioving this guy more control of first grade.

They meant he will remain first grade coach. Why would they play on meaning when what they have done has no doubt caused much grief and damage to the clubs reputation. If they had said he was stepping down to the Cutters it would have given hope and would have decreased the fan backlash which they surely knew was comin hence the timing of the announcement.

He is too positive and forward thinking for Mary's style, JD doesn't simply coach a style for the Cutters he also tweaks it to benefit them based on their opposition and such revolutionary thinking can't fly under Mary's rein (sic). The Dragons did that once all season, against the Sharks of all teams, look how that went. We don't have a top 4 side on paper so we need a coach who isn't static in his ideas and regressive in his mantras. We won't win based on D when we can't score more than 14 points on average, obv.

How about we give JD the team to prepare and just leave Mary in charge of interior design duties for the gym and change rooms.

Tony left of his own accord. Quote was..couldn't work with certain people. Dragons loss.
