Smith to join Cowboys in 2007

Thursday Jul 27 20:45 AEST
Canberra playmaker Jason Smith has rejected an offer from the Gold Coast Titans and agreed to play for North Queensland in the NRL next year.
The 34-year-old five-eighth came to a decision after consulting his Raiders team-mates and family members.
Smith will play alongside Dally M Medallist Johnathan Thurston in the halves for the Cowboys.
An experienced and clever player like Smith would be the perfect foil for gun halfback Johnathan Thurston, who's been forced to shoulder a huge load for the Cowboys this year.

Smith had told AAP earlier that the one-year offers from the Cowboys and Titans were similar financially and he would enjoy the lifestyles of both Townsville and the Gold Coast.

Smart move imo....go out a winner, or at least somewhat succesful.

If Smith doesn't break down next year then thats a smart signing for the Cowboys, probably came cheap as well.

Hopefully he can stay relatively injury free... will be interesting to see what sort of combination he and Thurston can come up with.

Congrats to the NQ Cowboys!

I honestly thought that we would see Jason Smith play out his career as a Gold Coast Titan though it was not to be and I wish him all the best. Awesome to see a Queensland great play out his career with a Queensland club ... we get to see a champion player run around for at least one more season too ... we are all winners here :D

The attraction was obviously the fact the Cowboys present a good chance of providing him with a fairytale ending to a great career ... his combination with Thurston should be exciting to watch.

Perhaps he was going to go where Billy Johnstone wasn't? ;-) A smoker is not going to enjoy a pre-season under the game's toughest trainer :D

Good signing for the Cows, could be the final piece to the puzzle.

Wonder what Firman will do now.

brisbane <firman???

Shane Perry, Brett Seymour, Brent McConnell and Brett Firman ...?

I think Firman is done as a NRL player, he will be earning a bucket load of cash in the Super League somewhere if someone will have him.

Who is to say the Raiders wont finish above the Cowboys this year even?

Im a Cowboys fan and between recruiting him and Minto Its bordering on embarrasing.

Smith is a great player but 35? He is one blind side hit, or tackle gone wrong from missing plenty of games. How many has he played for the Raiders in the last 2 seasons about 20 tops Im guessing.

Mate Im saying I think that he has only played about 20 games in two seasons.

Id be more likely that he will play somewhere between 6 and 10 next season.

Its not his fault, he is just getting old, good on him for getting someone to stump up 200K+ at his age.

well this year he has played 14 games of a possible 19, and has played 33, of a possible 43. so in 2 seasons so far he has missed 10 games, if he plays the last 5 games that will be 38/48 played, and 19 a season. that isnt bad for a 40 year old, if you consider the average alot of big name players miss 3 games for orign, and somtimes sit out after backing up for australia/nz or country/city. so if a high profil player can miss a couple of games for rep duty, u can give smith 5 games off a year. mind u there is a big difference between 6-10 and 19 ;)

A lot of our fans up here are against this signing. Too old, too injury prone, TOO BAD. I disagree. If we get 15+ games from him, we'll get our money's worth.

Someone asked about the money. One report I saw said GC offered him 150K and we offered another 50K but no details on how that is structured. Hopefully, it's based on games played.
