First big test of the new eligibility rules. Not applied retrospectively, what a joke...

http://www.rlwc2017.com/news/jennings-boosts-batis-world-cup-hopes

Just a day after the withdrawal of Jennings' rugby union-bound Eels team-mate Semi Radradra, Fiji National Rugby League CEO Timoci Naleba.revealed the former Australian and NSW star was in talks with Bati coach Michael Potter.

Jennings was a member of the Kangaroos squad which won the 2013 World Cup and had been expected to play for Tonga after being initially named in thei Mate Ma'a side for May's Pacific Test.

He previously represented Tonga at the 2008 World Cup but is also eligible for the Bati through his grandmother, who is from Rotuma, a Fijian dependency with a population of 2000.

Under new international eligibility rules introduced this year, a player can switch between a Tier 1 country and a Tier 2 nation for whom he also qualifies but not between two countries in the same tier.

However, Jennings did not play in the Pacific Test and the rules aren't retrospective so he remains eligible for the Bati and Naleba said the 29-year-old wanted to play for Fiji at the World Cup.

“Yes he has declared his availability but discussions are still ongoing between Michael and potter the coach and for him I believe he has already made the decision and he is keen of getting the opportunity to play for Fiji”, Naleba told Fiji one.

"We are always positive that Michael will be in the team. There has been consistent discussion with Michael Potter as well as other coaching staff to actually secure Michael's position.

"Michael is a Rotuman, so he has Fiji at heart and he is going to be the person that the whole of Rotuma and Fiji look to fill in that very important position.

In a separate interview with Fijivillage.com, Naleba said the availability of Jennings may depend on the Eels.

"What I can confirm is the fact that when we spoke to him he had expressed his intention to play for the Fiji in this year's world cup," Naleba said.

"Then again his confirmation to play may also be determined by the fact that his club has also got some conditions to his contract next year.

"That could be one of the factors he has to consider before actually being involved with the Fiji Bati at this year's World Cup."

The inclusion of Jennings would be a significant boost to Bati's hopes of improving on their semi-final defeats at the past two World Cups and qualifying for the December 2 final in Brisbane.

At his best, Jennings is one of the most potent centres in the NRL and has scored 129 tries in 232 games for Penrith, Sydney Roosters and Parramatta.

He has also played seven Tests for Australia and 18 Origins for NSW.

If he plays for Fiji, he could be reunited with former Test and Origin team-mate Jarryd Hayne, who has declared his interest in again wearing the Bati jersey he previously wore at the 2008 World Cup.

"With Michael and Jarryd together, that just stabilises the whole team and gives the confidence to new players playing alongside them to play well," Naleba said.

Hayne could play in the halves alongside South Sydney's most capped player John Sutton, allowing Manly’s Api Koroisau to play hooker, with captain Kevin Naiqama at fullback.

The Bati also boast the NRL's leading tryscorer Suliasi Vunivalu and Mandy's Akuila Uate are likely to be the wingers, while Waqa Blake, Taane Milne, Brayden Williame and Sitiveni Moceidreke are other centre options.

Fiji have strong forward depth, with Ashton Sims Tariq Sims, Korbin Sims, Jacob Saifiti, Kane Evans, Eloni Vunakece, Jayson Bukuya, Campbell Reagan-Gillard, Viliame Kikau and Ben Nakabuwai in contention for the World Cup.

Ridiculous really. We've gone down the path of switching between tier 1 and 2 which has its benefits but how does this help the sport. They're taking the p*ss now.

And what about his brothers? Are they going to do the same or will they play for Tonga.

Lucky they brought in these new rules to clean up eligibility..

Actually, we're wrong...

The rules still allow for movement between tier 2s as per the old once per 4 years rule.

3.5 A Player may change from one Tier Two/Tier Three Nation to another for which he/she is eligible pursuant to Rule 3.2, with the approval of the RLIF and subject to the condition that a Player may only make one such change in a four year period . The four year period shall commence from the date of any previous election .

So. *shrug*
Not that fussed then. Don't really agree with the rule but at least it isn't a loophole they've completely forgotten about.

This is where a strong management would step in.

Problem with league is coaches particularly Australian coaches have way too much say and look for loop holes etc they only care about winning not how it looks to the outside world. They have no idea how to sell the game by creating a perception as other sports do.

It's frustrating chips away at the credibility of the game. It's the same when Australia picked Radradra, why did they do that?

If you read the OP all the claims that Jennings has put his hand up for Fiji come from one man. Naleba, the Fiji National Rugby League CEO. I haven't seen a quote attributed to Jennings confirming the claim. If he does then the bagging on here is fair IMO but as far as I can see he hasn't said a word on the subject that has gone to print yet. Until he does I'll take the comments with a pinch of salt.

You guys are off with the pixies!
Do any of you even try to understand how it would feel being a son of many different countries?
Like you have to pick one of your relatives that you identify with and dismiss the rest ??!
Absolutel rubbishing blokes for having a love for more than 1 country.

Have a hard look at yourselves!
