PROMISING young Queenslander Shane Neumann admits Manly's coaching staff have taken a punt on him for Monday night's clash with Brisbane at Brookvale Oval.
With Jamie Lyon on Origin duty for NSW, Steve Bell likewise, for Queensland, and Steve Matai suspended, coach Des Hasler took the opportunity to call up Neumann from Jersey Flegg.
The highly-rated 19-year-old admitted he was ``shocked'' by his surprise elevation.
``I thought there'd be a few boys ahead in Premier League,'' Neumann, a Brisbane Easts junior said this week.
``It's a show of confidence from the coaches that I'm given a go.
``It's going be one of those games where I will need to impress a few people.
``They've gone out on a limb to select me here, so I don't want to let anyone down.''
Neumann's Jersey Flegg coach David Penna agrees that the young centre has been given a golden opportunity.
``The Origin period isn't good for everyone, but it is good for the young kids to get their chance,'' Penna said.
The Broncos are also feeling the representative drain of Origin, with seven players missing.
But there is no let-off for Neumann - he's been named to take on former Origin representative David Stagg rather than Broncos newcomer Nick Emmett.
``I've probably got him (Stagg) for pace, but that's about it,'' the strong defensive centre said.
``But I played against Nick last year when he played for Redcliffe, and I think I got on top of him in that game.''
Michael Robertson, who will partner Neumann on the left flank, believes the young gun will enjoy the challenge.
``He's a tough kid, and I think he'll handle it,'' the winger said.
``He'll have plenty of experience around him, and Matt Orford on his inside so I don't think he'll have any problems.''
Penna said Neumann has all the attributes to settle into the top grade.
``He's a very, very good defender for a centre - he can kick, he can catch, he can pass,'' Penna said.
