Jersey Sponsorships

with the likely increased cash flow into the game would anyone else like to see a move to a single jersey sponsor for each team ala EPL.

i understand this would initially be to the detriment of teams with cash flow issues however i believe in time the exclusivity of having a single companies name on the jersey would in time attract a higher premium.

i like how US sporting teams dont have any however, i think a good compromise would be a single sponsor.

really hate the current status quo of selling ever inch of the jersey to whoever they can find.

be curious to know peoples thoughts

Us teams don't have em because they are franchises owned by mega rich guys and the teams make money anyway.

I don't mind the sponsorships provided they look good on the shirt.

Would I like a single sponsor, European style? Yes. Will it ever happen? f**k no.

Even when more money comes into the code, clubs will still try to get every cent they can out of jersey sponsors.

Total jersey sponsorship at the momet nis worth around $1.5 mill ($1mill main, $.5 mill for the back and sleeves). What would be best for the game is if the NRL could get a total sponsorship deal for sleeve sponsor worth the equivalent of $.5mill for each team so every team had the same sleeve sponsor and then they were left to organise their own main sponsor. Just having a main and a sleeve would be a lot better. Could the NRL find a company willing to pay $8mill a year to be on every teams shirt sleeves?

Awesome idea PR. I have always thought they should bulk sell a lot more sponsorships.

Eg. Goal pads , corner posts, billboards etc. could all be bulk deals

The problem I see with the sleeve thing is Brisbane whining that they are subsidizing Cronulla and Canberra etc

It would work for some clubs. The Bulldogs have the number 1 selling jersey in the comp, and get a lot of FTA exposure. It wouldn't really work for poorer clubs like Manly or clubs like Canberra who barely get on FTA.

Great idea in theory. Wont work as certain clubs will get a lot more money it their own with the way the 9/Fox to FTA coverage works.
Would be better practise if everybody gets a fair go in a balanced full year draw. I.E. like the AFL do.

Wont work in league, well not at least in NSW. No team in Sydney has ever turned a profit. Sponsors barely cover the operating costs of a football club whilst the pokie earnings from their respective leagues clubs cover the void.

Full year draws, better television rights and fairer pokie laws are all small steps in getting clubs closer to a profit line. But by the time that this might occur, the NRL will be looking at expansion and salary cap increases. This will impact the operations of existing clubs and they will still need to secure strong sponsors to support their bottom line.

It's hard to brand bulk umbrella sponsorship as communism when the Tv rights distribution strategy was basically drafted by Karl Marx

I think the tv rights is oriented to make the rich richer and running the game into the ground. But thats just me.

I'd love that to happen.

I even love it when teams play without sleeve sponsors. I think that alone does a lot of damage to how a jersey looks.

The ARL should put limitations on jersey changes/sponsorship when they have things under control and can focus on lessor issues.

I think it's just when you've got a big boxed out panel that it becomes intrusive and starts looking like a sandwich board.

I would like to see some rules brought in about the colours that can be used. I don't like seeing sponsors logos that totally clash with jerseys. They need to be integrated with traditional blending colours and tones.

Less writing, more symbols, the better.

Lock this thread up now. They are trying to jam MORE sponsors on the jersey. There is nowhere near enough cash in the game to reduce the number of sponsors on the jersey.

An utter pipe dream.

Waits for the 'but it's all about brand recognition' brigade to argue with you Doc. Well it's hard to get brand recognition when no merkin wants to buy or wear your jersey because the sponsor ruins the damn thing.

How much profit do you reckon the average club makes out of selling jerseys? Enough to sacrifice some sponsorship money just so the jersey looks a little better?
