After suffering a minor hiccup last week when defeated by the Parramatta Eels 38-32, the Newcastle Knights regained that winning feeling on Sunday morning by comprehensively defeating the Central Coast Rip 52-6. The Knights rested several of their key players and as a consequence, lacked cohesion throughout the match and in particular the opening 15 minutes of play. The only points to come in that period was a penalty goal to the Rip’s winger Brydon Cain in the 10th minute.
Once the Knights gained some ball in the Rip’s 20-metre area, it didn’t take long for the points to start to come. Five-eight Simon Allen found his way across the Rip’s try line with a simple dummy. Fullback Sam Wooden converted from beside the posts to put the Knights in front for the first time in the match and that didn’t change. Six minutes later Knights centre Stephen Gordon crossed for the first of his double to extend the lead out to 10-2 after Wooden missed the conversion. Interchange forward Larry Taufua also crossed for a try before halftime, and Wooden again successfully converted to extend the lead out to 14. Winger Jonathon Wright also crossed before halftime for the first of his two tries out wide. Wooden converted from near touch to extend the lead out to 22-2. The Rip’s defence held firm for the remaining five minutes of play before halftime as both teams headed to the break with the score at 22-2. The Knights enjoyed the majority of the ball in the Rip’s end of the field and as they didn’t have their regular halfback in Dureau to lead them around the park, suffered from no direction in the opposition 20-metre area. They went to the break with a comfortable lead.
Just after halftime, Hayden Jeans scored for the Knights to put the issue beyond doubt and after Wooden converted, the score was 28-2 and there was no way back for the boys from the Central Coast. The Rip didn’t give up trying and they were rewarded for their efforts when second rower Tom Hillard scooped up a loose pass from halfback Matthew Sharp. Hillard then raced 90 metres to score his sides one and only try for the match. This wayward pass appeared to spark the Knights into action. Three tries in six minutes re-asserted the Knights stranglehold on the match. Centre Gordon scored his second try, Wooden scored his first and Hanan Laban also stormed his way over. This extended the Knights lead out to 42-6 with fourteen minutes remaining. Two more tries to the Knights enabled them to hit the half-century mark. Centre Matt Cooper raced 70 metres to score his try before Wright finished the scoring two minutes from fulltime. The Knights were comprehensive winners although they still have plenty of room for improvement.
Standout performers for the Knights included prop forward Kade Snowden along with Hanan Laban. These two forwards ran with plenty of aggression and made metres at will over the advantage line whenever they touched the ball.
Next week the Knights will look to continue on their already successful season when they host the third-last placed Souths Juniors who accounted for seventh placed Manly 42-6. It looms as a danger match for the Knights.
