Jim Beam Cup - Final

Yee-har! The Bulls are back ! Its September, Its sudden death, Its serious.

After a strong performance to get rid of Wenty last week, the Bulls turned the dial to destroy today against Windsor and are through to the Grand Final next week.

The Bulls haven’t played to their potential all year. In a competition where the standard is well below the old metro cup, they’ve been able to get through the regular season playing for half a game here and there to get them to the semis.

Today they played their best football of the season to beat Windsor 28-18 in the Preliminary final at Ringrose. The Bulls will now meet The Entrance in the Grand Final next Sunday at Telstra Stadium. Both grand finalists were the competition front runners for most of the season and, if the Bulls repeat today’s form, it should be a great match.

Two weeks ago, the notoriously slow starting Bulls were down 26-0 at half time to Windsor in the SF. Today they scored after 39 seconds to give the large crowd the message that we’d be seeing the switched on Bulls today – a sight rarely seen since early in the season.

The Bulls got out to 12 nil with two early tries to fullback Dane Gilmore. A spate of penalties got the Wolves back into the game but the Bulls’ defence was phenomenal. Shackleton, Paiyo and Mostyn were hitting hard and backs Naiqama and Corrie were committed and effective. The Wolves made some mistakes from the pressure and could not breach the defence, despite clever Trindall work getting them a number of repeat sets.

The Bulls were rewarded for the pressure, with Burns picking up a dropped ball and running away to score late in the first half. 16-0 at half time.

Windsor called for the wolf suit and the mascot got the crowd, and the team going: Windsor scored in the first few minutes of the second half to make it 16-6. But the Bulls were able to get back into the swing and build pressure again on the Windsor line. A great play from a penalty in front saw Tippett throw a perfect ball to Naiqama way out wide to score and take the score to 20-6.

The play was then evenly shared between the teams. The Bulls knew they had to keep scoring as the Wolves wouldn’t give up. Close to the line and in quick succession, Moffett went from dummy half, then Paiyo, then Moffett again, driving over to make it 26-6. A penalty soon after and it was 28-6 with 13 minutes to go.

The Trickster Trindall was still creating the opportunities for the Wolves and Tito The Tank Niumata never stopped hitting the ball up, often twice in a set (no wonder Doonside had a good year when they were both there in 2002).

The Wolves pressure told and they scored out wide with 12 minutes to go, a great conversion making it 28-12. Only a few minutes later the dangerous Mark Butler scored to make it 28-18. There were real concerns for the Bulls when a great kick through from a scrum by Trindall had Butler winning the chase, but the bounce took the ball the wrong way for the Wolves. The Bulls regrouped and settled and played out the final few minutes for a memorable, truly deserved win.

Trindall, Niumata and Butler were the best for the Wolves. For the Bulls, everyone played close to their best games all year. Burns, Corrie and Naiqama were sensational in defence. Shane Shackleton continued to be the backbone of the Bulls pack and must be on his way to playing at a higher level. Moffett and Tippett were inspirational as always, Grech was solid and surprisingly elusive at times, and Mostyn was dangerous in both attack and defence.

It was a hard game and the Bulls’ injury toll (not to mention the 2 players on report or the other 2 that can’t be picked because of the points system) is a worry for next week. But they are there, which is what matters. If only they were playing at Ringrose again – today’s result maintained the Bulls’ perfect 9 out of 9 record there in their 5 year history.

But then again, they’ve never lost at Telstra either.

Good report NFed.
The Bulls always looked in control yesterday and showed the high level of football they are capable of.
The pack really stood up and I was especially impressed with Shackletons performance. He was simply outstanding in the first 20minutes.
I think the Bulls really do need to work on their discipline though. Too many times they gave away stupid penalties and seem to be easily wound in to petty squabbles.
John Kagi also is a danger to the Bulls in defence and often in attack. His ability to read the game seems quite poor although he is potentially a great player due to his sheer size and strength out wide.
And NFed who are the Bulls players currently not available due to injury and the PPI?

Injuries are Jasson Asplet, Travis Touma, Sami Rakabu. And yesterday several others were limping around - Mostyn, Grech and Burns.

As far as the points system goes, the club had to cut Epa Navale half way through the season and has been unable to select Nathan de Bartolo since Elias Paiyo became available.

I agree with your comments about the Bulls' discipline. Kagi is the worst offender.

Rakabu in this weekend for Kagi.
This is a big risk by the Bulls seeing Rakabu hasnt played now for a number of weeks.
Good to see the Bulls website recently updated.

Rakabu is a big risk. He scored 13 tries before he was injured in Round 8 and then didnt play again until Round 22. In the semi against Windsor he could barely run at more than a canter and then was carried off in the second half. I couldnt believe it when he started the following week against Wenty, he was limping in the first play of the game but lasted 72 minutes.

The Bulls have really missed Chris Salem. He went to Singapore for work mid season. He came back for a couple weeks and was on the bench against Wenty but was not picked last week on the basis that he returned to Singapore this week.

Salems inclusion would have definately improved the Bulls teams during the finals campaign.
From what Ive seen he has a great ability to get on the outside of his opposition center and draw in the winger. This creating overlaps where the Bulls speedy flanks capitalise on. He also has great footwork and has done well in recent seasons when selected for the Lebanon Cedars for various rep fixtures.

By the way NFed is there any plans by the Bulls to rename and become the Bankstown Bulls as the junior club is now known?
I feel it would connect better with the local community and also give the Bulls a stronger identity. It appears that you have now settled at Potts, unless you know something I dont, and its proved to be a good home ground for the Bulls so Im taking it you will now continue to be settled at Bankstown.

I know nothing about name changes but what is of more interest to me is whether the Bulldogs will continue to run a PL team. I noticed that they have lost 5 players for 2005 but signed only one.

If the Bulls could take over the Bulldogs spot in that competition they would not face the continual loss of players under the points system. Otherwise Epa Navale will be lost to the code - as a dual international, he will just go back to Rugby and I guess Souths Juniors will look at DeBartolo for their PL team next year.

The Bulls certainly have the financial resources.

I believe if it doesnt happen for 2005 it will happen in the following years.
It seems teams are finally realising the financial benefits of linking with a feeder club to provide a PL team and I personally dont think it will be long now before we see the State Cup concept come into being.
The Bulls certainly do have the finances and must be congratulated on the large amount of sponsorships obtained and the implementation of the business club which have obviously reaped large financial rewards.
And NFed do you know how much longer Elias Paiyo intends to play?

I am pretty sure he will play again next year. I saw him in the city earlier in the season and I asked him when he was coming back and he indicated that it would not be until next year, so he intends to keep going. He is allegedly only 32.

Sydney Bulls captain Willie Grech will make his international debut for Malta on Saturday week when the fledgling nation takes on Fiji A at Melita Stadium in Sydney's west.

Grech's team-mate Shane Shackelton who was also selected in the initial 26-man squad has since been selected for the NSW Residents team to tour New Zealand at the time of the Malta-Fiji A match.

Fresh from their 78-0 inaugural match defeat of the British Defence Forces 2 weeks ago, Malta will be lead by former Sharks' Ben Sammut following injury to former Eel and Malta captain Dallas Weston. John Buttigieg is also a late ommision.

Meanwhile, Fiji A will field a strong team which is recognised by the FIJIRL as the emerging Fiji team. Players will come from Jim Beam Cup through to Premier League.

I'm looking forward to that match.

I'll be interested to see the Fiji A team - is there any chance we could have two Wes Naiqamas in the team? Wes Naiqama, (St George Premier League) on one wing, and Wes Naiqama (Sydney Bulls) on the other?

Yes, very much a possibility. Both Wes's are in contention as is Former Eels' Wise Kativerata who will take part in the Sydney Grade Rugby Union Grand Final this weekend for Randwick.

Fiji A will announce their team this Saturday, and both the Malta and Fiji A line-ups will appear at www.malteserugbyleague.com by Monday.

Wise might not be able to play. Although he has been playing mainly reserve grade for Randwick, NSW have picked him to go Argentina in a few weeks.

Well maybe not then.

Either way, I do know the make up of the Malta team and both lineups will appear by Monday.
