Jim Beam round 3

Friday night's local derby between Cabramatta and Wenty has been awarded match of the round status. Both sides go in with a win and a loss and the presence of Mick Mallia, Francis Betham and Casey Ellis in the cabra 13 will add some interest as they were all members of Wenty's premiership winning reserve grade team last year.

The Bull's huge injury list appears to have lessened this week with Shane Shackleton in the back row and Paul Winterstein and Dave Moffatt named in a 6 man bench. Souths will need to starve the classy Bulls backline if they are to challenge. Big League lists this game as 2.15 pm on saturday. This is contrary to previous advice from Souths.

Leichhardt will host another interesting game as Ryde Eastwood take on Windsor. There could be some fierce exhanges in the forwards as former St Marys players Corey Johnstone (Ryde), and Lino Salafai and Shanelle Haumono do battle. Ryde have taken advantage of Balmain's bye in Premier League to include Jermaine Awahou in their line up.

In other games Newtown and The Entrance should win comfortably against Ourimbah and Woy Woy respectively. It is good to see that Gordon Graff and Manu Asova will still be representing a Magpie club this year despite being cut by Wests Premier League.

Meanwhile Erina sit back and advance to 6 points courtesy of the bye.

Souths juniors website confirms a 2.15 pm start. This means I wont be able to get to Leichhardt but the Windsor game will be broadcast on 89.9FM.

Hawkesbury Radio. They have been broadcasting Penrith A grade for several years and now that Windsor is in JB they often call their games. They called the 2 JB semis at St Marys last year.

MM: Why have Souths Juniors been mucking around with the kick off times? I can't get to that game as the Jets come first, but I would have loved to have gone to Redfern for that game.

Cabramatta tasted defeat again when Wenty converted a 8-6 deficit 15 minutes from time to a 24-8 win at cabra tonight.

Wenty scored in the 10th minute when Mallia dropped the ball and Bell strolled over. The Parke conversion made it 6-0. There were plenty of big hits as the ball moved up and down the field without any addition to the score.

After successfully defusing a series a Jolly grubbers Wenty finally conceded 5 minutes before half time when Mallia was able to get his hand on another Jolly special. Branighan locked up the scores with the conversion. Cabra fed off the momentum to be attacking in the final seconds only to see Sargent intercept. The official ruled that he had a head start and Branighan goaled for an 8-6 lead at oranges.

Cabra appeared to be gaining the ascendancy in the second half with strong running from Ellis and Betham and creative work from Jolly and Branighan but the Wenty defence held up and when the closely marked Ella was given an inch he put Gwynne over in the corner. A great conversion from Parke gave Wenty a 4 point advantage.

Cabra camped in the Wenty quarter for an extended period but failed to capitalise. The Magpies swept the ball down the field and then slick footwork from Parke was combined with a great ball to see Byrne under the posts.

When Cabra sought a consolation try a dropped was flicked up by Ella who travelled 85 metres for another try.

Cabra are quickly finding out that there are not many easy games in Jim Beam in 2004. They next face souths at Redfern on 17 April.

The Sydney Bulls continued their winning run with a 58-32 win over Souths Juniors in the tryathon at Redfern today.

Souths really put it to the Bulls in the first 25 minutes and led 10-6 at that stage but then the Bulls frenetic razzle dazzle passing game clicked and 6 unaswere tries saw the Bulls bolt to a 40-10 lead 9 minutes after half time.

From this point Souths scored 2 tries then the Bulls 3 and then Souths another 2. Nathan Lai got a hat trick for Souths.

Despite naming 19 players the Bulls still had two in the team that did not appear in the program. Moreover Garry Fahey has played in all three games but is yet to appear in Big League. The back up forwards are holding the line while the backs are at times unstoppab le. Epa Navale is showing a new found versatlity moving from the wing to prop at the first interchange.

Patten, Nicholas and Lai were often dangerous for the home team.

In the major preliminary game Souths beat Cronulla 32-6 in the Flegg. The Sharks had a few big guys butdidnt show much attacking prowess. Alley Tovio scored a hat trick for Souths.

In other Jim Beam games, Ryde Eastwood beat Windsor 22-10 and Newtown beat Ourimbah 28-22. The Entrance play Woy Woy at EDSACC tomorrow.

Great to hear the Bulls had a good win - I thought that would be a danger game for them. Wenty sound like they are a force this year again; and Ryde too. I'm a bit disappointed with Windsor's results so far - I think they may just be taking some time to get their combinations together.

Nathan Barnes has a shoulder injury. In the post match interview he said that he should not have played on saturday and he will not play against Woy Woy this weekend.
