Cabramatta ensured that they didnt allow the top sides to get too much of break on them by beating Ryde Eastwood 32-16 at Leichhardt today.

It was an arm wrestle for the first twenty minutes and then a Branighan ball put Croft in space and a neat step saw him under the posts. The Hawks quicky struck back through Wignell and shortly thereafter Jolly delivered a great pass to allow Croft to score his second. Cabra led 12-4 at the break.

Hawks coach Fletcher told his troops that Cabra was doing nothing and they were doing less and he would bust their arses if they didnt lift. This inspiration didnt seem to have any effect as Farani crossed 3 minutes into the second stanza after some brilliant play by Fluke and Betham. Cabra lead 16-4.

The Blues again worked the ball downfield and a grubber from Jolly looked like a certain try but it hit the post and bounced back to Ryde. At the end of the next set Andrews grubbered for Ryde, the ball hit the post and bounced back into his arms! This fortune allowed the Hawks to get closer than they deserved.

The completion of a hat trick to Croft and a couple tries to Best closed out the game although a last second try to Kassab from a forward pass meant that the final score flattered Ryde.

Cabra built their win on the forward power of Brown, Sedgewick, Ellis and "cracker" atoa Lelilio on debut and the clever work of Jolly and Branighan. Marc Cameron also got his first game for Cabra and managed to get put on report twice in as many minutes.

This game was played after Mathews and Ball quarter finals and the crowd was passionate about the latter game. This is a vast contrast to the lack of atmosphere of this game with little more than 100 stayed for Jim Beam

Cabramatta 32 (T Croft 3, S Best 2, A Farani tries, L Branighan 4 goals) beat Ryde Eastwood 16 (T Wignell, M Andrews, M Kassab tries, T Wignell, D Brown goals)

Sydney Bulls joined The Entrance at the top of the table with a nail biting 28-26 win over Wenty at Ringrose today. The game could have gone either way with both sides scoring 5 tries. No doubt Bulls fans would have been thinking about the last second loss to Wenty in the 2003 preliminary final as Wenty attacked the Bulls line in the final part of the game.

Wenty are not as strong as last year but with a game built around uncompromising defence and a deterimation to capitalise on defensive lapses by the Bulls, Wenty held a commanding 14-4 lead at the break.

The Bulls appeared more composed on resumption and posted 2 tries within 10 minutes. Another promising raid was ended by a Wenty strip allowing a Tippett penalty goal that gave the Bulls the lead for the first time and ultimately proved decisive.

Wenty managed to regain a 26-22 lead when Byrne scored on the back of a penalty and then marching for backchat but Debartolo scored in the corner with 7 minutes remaining and Tippett's conversion finalised the scoring.

Parke and Sargent were best for Wenty and it was good to see Jack Mazzoleni finally get a run. Tippett controlled the Bulls game while Willie Grech showed more confidence in his third game back after more than a season out.

Sydney Bulls 28 (W Grech 2, E Navale, M Corrie, N De Bartolo tries, A Tippett 4 goals) beat Wenty 26 (C Parke, S Gwynne, D Bell, B Sargent, J Byrne tries, C Parke 3 goals)

Jared has been in the 17 in all 6 games and has made an impact if injected at the right time, but yesterday with the Bulls facing their first real opposition this season he got less than 10 minutes game time and was lokking a bit slow. He wasnt happy when he was taken off.

Thats a shame - hopefully that changes next week.

Its very annoying to have a reason to want the Bulls to do well though - I'm hoping ryde see fit to sign him next year so I can cheer him properly ;-)

Erina beat Newtown 42-18. The table now is as follows:

12 The Entrance*, Sydney Bulls
8 Windsor, Ryde Eastwood*, Erina*
6 Cabramatta, Wenty
4 Newtown*, Ourimbah*, Souths Jnrs*
0 Woy Woy

* received 2 points for a bye

Wenty prop Siose Muliumu, who was sent off in last year's grand final is playing for french club Limoux. He was sent off in Limoux's 19-18 win over Halifax in the Challenge Cup. There was a problem with the video so got off and played in Limoux's 80-20 loss to Wigan. Muliumu is one of 6 NZ players in the Limoux team and he has previously played in the Challenge Cup for british club, Whitehaven.

In other news, Windsor have signed another player from Doonside. Dom Vea has been registered by the Wolves in the Penrith JRL and no doubt played yesterday. Expect to see him adding more size to the Windsor Jim Beam side a few weeks down the track.

I'm looking forward to the Bulls v Windsor game next weekend - hopefully the Bulls will start getting a bit tougher after the close one yesterday.

(I'm pretty sure that's who they are playing although according to NSWRL / sporting pulse site they are playing in an unusual doubleheader where they take on both Windsor and Ryde on the same day.)

It was interesting to see the less flamboyant players come through for the Bulls in the Wenty game yesterday - Grech and Touma and Nohra made the difference, whereas in previous games its been all about the flash and flair of the backs, and these type of players become a bit invisible.

Thats why the Bulls are such a good team to follow - plenty of flash most of the time but (I hope) can tough it out when it matters ... now if only we could get Pongia back that would be the best combination.
