Cabramatta ensured that they didnt allow the top sides to get too much of break on them by beating Ryde Eastwood 32-16 at Leichhardt today.
It was an arm wrestle for the first twenty minutes and then a Branighan ball put Croft in space and a neat step saw him under the posts. The Hawks quicky struck back through Wignell and shortly thereafter Jolly delivered a great pass to allow Croft to score his second. Cabra led 12-4 at the break.
Hawks coach Fletcher told his troops that Cabra was doing nothing and they were doing less and he would bust their arses if they didnt lift. This inspiration didnt seem to have any effect as Farani crossed 3 minutes into the second stanza after some brilliant play by Fluke and Betham. Cabra lead 16-4.
The Blues again worked the ball downfield and a grubber from Jolly looked like a certain try but it hit the post and bounced back to Ryde. At the end of the next set Andrews grubbered for Ryde, the ball hit the post and bounced back into his arms! This fortune allowed the Hawks to get closer than they deserved.
The completion of a hat trick to Croft and a couple tries to Best closed out the game although a last second try to Kassab from a forward pass meant that the final score flattered Ryde.
Cabra built their win on the forward power of Brown, Sedgewick, Ellis and "cracker" atoa Lelilio on debut and the clever work of Jolly and Branighan. Marc Cameron also got his first game for Cabra and managed to get put on report twice in as many minutes.
This game was played after Mathews and Ball quarter finals and the crowd was passionate about the latter game. This is a vast contrast to the lack of atmosphere of this game with little more than 100 stayed for Jim Beam
