Raiders battling to re-sign star duo

CANBERRA'S Ruben Wiki and Joel Monaghan intend to test their open market value after negotiations with the Raiders broke down.

New Zealand captain Wiki will listen to offers from NRL and English Super League clubs while Monaghan will look to remain in Australia.

Wiki is understood to be seeking a development role or junior coaching when he finishes with football as part of the deal.

Raiders chief executive Simon Hawkins and coach Matthew Elliott met with player manager Jim Banaghan yesterday, who looks after both Wiki and Monaghan, and were informed the pair would enter the open market after June 30.

"We've been in negotiations with them for a while and we're desperate to have them remain at the club," Elliott said.

"They're certainly telling us that they're very happy here and want to stay at the club but they also want to test their value on the market."

Banaghan said this would be Wiki's final contract and the New Zealand captain was looking for some form of employment in the game post-football.

"For Ruben we want to look at life post-football and for Joel we want some information on where the club's going to be buying and just to test the market and see what he's worth."

Monaghan has been linked with Manly where his brother Michael is playing.

Monaghan played against Manly on Saturday night scoring three tries but his brother Michael missed the game due to injury.

Despite testing the open market Monaghan, who is now the second top tryscorer in the NRL after his hat-trick, said he was still hoping to stay in Canberra.

"My heart's here," he said after the win over Manly.

"I've been here for 22 years and hopefully I'll spend my next 22 here."

Elliott said the club had placed Monaghan at the top of their hit list..

"He's our priority signing and we hope to have that sorted out sooner rather than later. When you get players of that quality, re-signing them is never without a challenge and we need to make that challenge."

It says nothing about them coming here in the Herald. It just says that they're planning to test the market.

I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be, since this would be breaching the anti-tampering rules...

Monaghan wouldn't be a bad signing. He's a big strong winger, who can score tries. I reckon Canberra will try hard to keep him.

Nice signings - but J.Monas has been quoted as saying he wants to live in Canberra for life because he likes the place, and Wiki IS Canberra. They'll both re-sign.
