FORMER NRL player Joel Romelo has been charged following a police bust of an alleged ice-dealing syndicate in Darwin.
Romelo, 26, who played for Penrith, Canterbury and Melbourne, was arrested in Darwin on Tuesday, along with four others who are allegedly part of the mid-range dealer group.
Police received a tip-off through the Dob in a Dealer campaign, and targeted and pulled over Romelo and a woman, 30, in a car on Tuesday morning, allegedly finding 14g of methamphetamine.
When they raided the pair’s apartment in Cullen Bay, they allegedly found another 2g of methamphetamine and $10,000 in cash, and arrested Christopher Nayda, 25, who was at the property.
Later, they pulled over another car in the CBD, finding another 7g of methamphetamine and arresting two other associates, Jacob Edwards, 30 and Kane Wrigglesworth, 21.

Romelo is the second NT athlete to be charged with drugs offences in six months, after former Brisbane AFL player Jason Roe pleaded guilty in October to buying and selling a commercial quantity of cannabis.
The four men appeared in Darwin Magistrates Court on Wednesday to face charges of possessing and supplying methamphetamine.
Romelo was in breach of bail and will be remanded in custody to appear again on May 4.
Nayda was also refused bail, while Wrigglesworth and Edwards were both bailed, and all three will also appear again on May 4.

The woman was charged with possession of methamphetamine and was issued with a notice to appear.

The most impressive thing about this guy was his fighting ability.

From 2009...

IT seems Matt Elliott is not the only one feeling the heat out Penrith way as the new season approaches.

Senior forward Trent Waterhouse and young buck Joel Romelo shocked team mates recently by trading punches at training.

The fight was so spirited it forced Elliott to halt an opposed session that was taking place when tensions erupted.

One onlooker said Waterhouse resented a "heavy" tackle from Romelo, a member of Penrith's Under 20s squad yet to taste first grade.

The former Test lock got to his feet and towered over the diminutive 19-year-old hooker.

But despite giving away nearly 15kg in weight and 24cm in height, Romelo stood his ground and went toe-to-toe with his big-name opponent.

"Waterhouse just got up from the tackle and they just sort of looked at one another for a split second," the onlooker said.

"Then it was on for young and old. The kid (Romelo) didn't take a backward step either."

Other team mates rushed in to separate the brawling pair, while Elliott reportedly extended them both an invitation to "finish it out the back and then return to training."

The coach did not return our call last night.

Panthers general manager Mick Leary confirmed the altercation had taken place, but was satisfied the pair had resolved their differences. He said no action would be taken against either player.

"It's just that time of the year where the boys are itchy to play and I suppose you could say there were a few frustrations," Leary said.

"From the report I received, there was a bit of push and shove between Trent and Joel but they've now sorted it out."

The 'ice' epidemic is a scourge on society so if proven guilty hopefully Joel Romelo get's what he deserves which is surely a long stretch in a correctional facility.

It's Darwin. He'll dob in someone for a reduced sentence, that person will then dob on someone else for a reduced sentence, and so it goes around until someone finally dobs on Romelo again for a reduced sentence and sets of the circle again, all the while darwim police and judiciary system scratch their heads at why they can't stop the ice epidemic.
