As a casual follower of the NFL I cant for the life of me figure out what the deal is with the Joey Bosa contract situation.

Can anyone explain it?

To put it simply...

The Chargers have a way they contract rookies...

And Joey Bosa wanted a deal similar to the previous No 3 draft picks.

The problem was they both refused to budge on their position until it got rediculous.

Yeah Shiznit pretty much nailed it.
Ill be interested to see how he goes, it's not a popular view but i think he's got a pretty decent chance to bust.

And by bust i mean his floor is probably a decent to good NFL dlmen, but im not sure he'll ever live up to the JJ Watt lite comps

If your wanting something more specific it comes down to the fact that the previous no 3's had either the entire signing bonus paid in the first season or offset language removed from the contract so if he gets cut by the Chargers he would be allowed to keep his signing bonus he got from the Chargers and potentially collect a new signing bonus from a new team... Essentially double dipping.

The Chargers argued that they have never allow either of those conditions in any of the rookie deals they have done post the CBA...

The problem with that argument was that they never picked top 3 before that so that logic was flawed.

The silly part of it was that if they have to cut Bosa before his deal is up.... They have far bigger issues than recouping the bloody signing bonus...

Good thread, because it took me a lot of reading to make sense of it all.

I was on Bosa's side initially. But then when he still wanted to sign when they were offering 85%.... What a dickhead.

Oh yeah, & he missed yesterday's training due to injury, & it's doubtful he'll play on Sunday.

That's the chargers for you. Want the city to pay hundreds of millions for a stadium but too cheap to pay the going rate for the #3 pick.
