He was "halves coach" of the Knights, Eels and Dogs in 2008 and those sides underperformed massively, especially the halves. Those 3 sides came 9th, 11th and 16th respectively.

In 2010 he was "outside backs" coach at the Melbourne Rebels and they came dead last in 2011 with the worst point scoring average in the S15

Not a good record

Looking at those three sides, and the halves at the time, "you can't polish a turd" comes to mind.

He has had input with us before with Foran and DCE, they go alright as a halves pairing I think.

The Bulldogs I can agree with but Tim Smith and Jarrod Mullen were considered future stars back in 2008. Neither shone in 2008 like they should have under a bloke like Joey, Tims alchohol issues aside.

Foran and DCE are products of good systems and have been helped greatly by having a great team around them. Jamie Lyon being a huge contributer to their games. Joey has most of the work done for him at Manly, you could even say he would be just polishing a diamond.

They were considered top prospects, neither has done a whole lot since, the expectations were too high in hindsight, Mullen could still prove that wrong but I doubt it.

I agree, at Manly the quality of the side is a big influence, but the same can be said for those 2008 teams, they were poor overall and influenced the halves play.

I also agree he's walking into a great set up, a quality side with one of the best halves pairing (as a whole) in the comp, and he had a part in their development, nobody knows how much exactly, but it was enough for it to become a side issue in Foran's decision to re-sign.

Well I still remain sceptical based on the performances of his previous students, that includes the blokes who have been in the NSW sides of the last 2-3 series too given his involvement in those teams.

Lets not lose sight of the fact Toovey is also a former Australian half/hooker and team mate of Johns.

If anything Johns will offer things to our halves.
1. Improve their kicking game
2. Refine their passing game (Especially Foran who tends to hit the line himself a bit too often in 2012. It became easy to read imho)

I think he will also work on goal kicking, which let us down at times this season. I'd like to see DCE officially take this from Killer next season. Killer is good, but you can tell he doesn't really want that added responsibility and he has had a few lower leg injuries.

I think he will be good for the mental side of the game too, both guys seem to run on instinct a lot. Getting them to control a game and make better decisions, particularly DCE, should be an aim. Cronk is a great example of where you want to head.

Remember that as the assistant coach, he will coach more than just the halves.

Having the tactical brain of an immortal on our coaching staff will be of immense benefit.
