John Muggleton field goal to win on fulltime

Does anyone remember a game in the early 80s when John Muggleton kicked a field goal on fulltime to win the game for the Eels?. I remember clearly John Harker and a camera crew coming to St Pats Dundas where I was a student and interviewing Muggos (a teacher there then) and filming him kick a few field goals on the school oval. It would have been around 1984 but I'm not sure.

And I can't be sure of the details of the game. I think the final score was 11-10, he was tackled on halfway and tapped forward as no marker and just knocked it over from just under 50m out. I think it was against St George but I'm not certain of these details or which ground the game was at (too early for Parra Stadium).

Any confimration of any details appreciated!

I can't remember any details either but my recollection is much the same as yours. Apart from the school part of course.

:-k ... can't say I do .... BUT he has alot to answer for - making more recent forwards think they can kick field goals too - Ian Hindy and Caylo :-s

42m field goal after the siren in 1987 to beat the Dragons 21-20.
I think the game was at the SCG - Saints were using it as their home ground while the Kogarah Oval was being fixed up.

Gotta feel sorry for John Harker though -
He's gone from running around with a camera crew and interviewing footy stars to running around with a camera crew invading homes flogging Napisan to unsuspecting housewives

Thanks Tyler. That sounds like the game! Though I was no longer at school that year but my Brother was still so maybe it was he that saw Harks! Too long ago. I can remember that kick on or after the siren though. Still amazing 20 odd years later!

I remember it being a wet day also...which made the field goal even more brilliant.

1987 v Saints at the SCG.
Eric Grothe slipped over on the way out to the field so the team only had 12 players for the kick-off and Sterlo who was captain didn't even realise. Steve Robinson made a huge 50m break from nearly the kickoff right where Eric should have been .Sparrow Eriksson scored a good try in the Brewongle stand corner . As mentioned . 20-20 with the last play , Muggo stands up 42m straight in front , has no marker , plays it forward to himsalf and BANG ! over she goes. And 13 saints stand there with their mouths wide open , would've got sunburnt palates except it was very very overcast. Fantastic ay in an otherwise crappy season

Harker was a year ahead of me at high school. He was a state water polo player back then.

I went to Pats at Dundas too, bloody Muggo, every bloody PE class and footy training we had to watch him kick 10 field goals from halfway and hear his dumb story again, no wonder you still remember it.

He was a damn good player Muggo. He did some very classy things on the field. I remember one day at the old Sydney Sports Ground where his offloads single-handedly destroyed the Roosters.

Didn't he almost snare the Mick Cronin record of 27 (?)* goals in a row at one point ?

* I think Hazem has the record now.

Muggo was one of those rare very talented forwards - could do the hard work, but also had all sorts of other skills - passing, kicking, organising

shame his talents are now wasted on rah-rahs
