Johns as Messenger

All I can say is, what a shock! People involved with the RLIF are coming up with some very interesting ideas and not letting some good progress slip away. The Victory Cup, European Nations and Med Cup are all confirmed for next year and the Kiwis are talking about an Anniversary tour in 2007 to the UK with Andrew Johns as the guest Aussie, as per Dally Messenger's role in 1907. Whilst I'm not really for or against this proposal yet, I am pleased to see people high up the food chain seriously considering some good initiatives.

Why do they say that they won't get the crowds in Australia?

The 2002 Aus-GB test held in Sydney got a bigger crowd than any of the 5 matches played in England since 1995.

Although the 1999 Aus-GB match in Brisbane was smaller than any of the British figures.

The 1995 & 2000 World Cup matches against England all got bigger crowds than the Sydney match, but who's to say it won't be the same in Australia. If standard test matches get bigger crowds in Sydney, then so should WC matches.

They also played against NSW though, or at least a development team. Johns lining up against the Blues after the season, that's a sure-fire sellout crowd.

I like the All Golds idea. But I see clashes with a possible World Cup that year. The schedule i too small for the both of them, unless the NRL cut back their year (fat chance). If I had to sacrifice something it'd be the All Golds. GO RLWC!!

Kiwis are talking about an Anniversary tour in 2007 to the UK with Andrew Johns as the guest Aussie, as per Dally Messenger's role in 1907

Will Andrew Johns still be playing in 2007? What happens to Stacey Jones? I don't know that that'd be welcomed by the half back being replaced.

The report said "they'll pick up a star Australian player, for instance Andrew Johns and take him on tour"

They just used Johns as an example. Not that he'll be the one going.

I think the All Golds idea is fantastic, provided it doesn't prevent a World Cup.
It has to be Johns though. The symbolism of Joey being chosen as the heir to Messenger at the twighlight of his career would not only be a fantastic honour for Johns, but also a promoter's dream. It wouldn't have to be a protracted tour - even a one-off game in the UK would be a great event, without placing unneccesary strain on fitting Joey into a team for an entire, important series.
As a one-off it would be a cracker.

It is a great idea.

Doesn't have to be Joey though, and doesn't have to be a symbolic Messenger as such.

For mine, the Kiwis could do with a fullback or standoff - Jones and Joey could play together I guess given that Jones' running game is his strength.

Lockyer would be the other obvious candidite, or a retired Brad Fittler
