How long would that take? I'll say it again - Rams home games rated a Zero in Adelaide. And the WA audience can watch league now on pay TV live. What are their ratings?

Not true, there are already 200k tuning in to GF's across the two states with ZERO RL presence, media, profile or games on decent times.

But yes, we must kill any club on the East to we can revisit the 8000 crowds in Perth. Grow the game - have less fans. Do you own a business???
cough 28,000, cough 28,000! The Reds were reasonably well supported given what was happening to every club in terms of fans walking away at the time and finished mid table for attendances for every season they existed (beating alot of so called heartland clubs along the way)

Norths were far more benefitial to the code than Perth ever was. Higher average crowds. Higher TV ratings. Higher on-field performances.

95-97 Norths average approx 11,000 Reds averaged approx 10,000, yep that 87 year head start that Norths had paid huge dividends!

He intentionally ignores that. Doesn't gel with his dimwit arguments about killing the game in Sydney so he can have his 8000 string Reds home crowd back!

those 8000 strings will come in very useful I'm sure!
The decision some East coast blow ins made in 1996 (and who subsequently picked up their bundle and ran of to Melbourne when the chance arose) has absolutely nothing to do with me, the WA Reds or the people now putting together our bid for admittance, your point is?

After their debut match attendance of 28,000 they didn't get within 10,000 of that again.

In 1998 the Rams averaged 7,472.

Given that Port Adelaide and the Crows now dominate Adelaide is there much left?

Adelaide has the least congested sports market out of the major capital cities. I've listed a few others just for comparison.

Code:
		NRL	AFL	S14	HAL

Sydney 9	1	1	1
Melbourne	1	8?	0	1
Brisbane	1	1	1	1
Perth 0	2	1	1
Adelaide	0	2	0	1
Gold Coast 1	0	0	1
Newcastle	1	0	0	1
Canberra	1	0	1	0

Doesn't matter, they are one eyed AR, if they don't follow an AFL team they have their local comp which is still strong. League may find a small niche but is it worth it?

Code:
        NRL AFL S14 HAL

Sydney 9 1 1 1
Melbourne 1 8? 0 1
Brisbane 1 1 1 1
Perth 0 2 1 1
Adelaide 0 2 0 1
Gold Coast 1 0 0 1
Newcastle 1 0 0 1
Canberra 1 0 1 0

I guess HAL = A League, and not 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Does soccer count - being a summer sport?

Depends if we are talking fans or corporates i guess? Shouldn't matter re fans but would re sponsorship $'s. All irrelevant anyway as you need to average the teams against the populations/$'s in that city.

Of course its worth it....but patience and vision is also important.

One eyed Aussie Rules supporters can also support a r/l team...as many do in Melb.

I am not saying get rid of all the teams in Sydney...surely it is the heartland and very valueable property in terms in r/l, but we need to look beyond just the heartland to prosper...again I hate to use the afl as a comparison....they are moving to Sydney (now a second team) and of course GC (second team in Q'ld.) Very valuable in terms of tv rights, which also include pay/tv and corporate dollars and potential supporters of the game.

Pay TV rights from AFL will only increase because of having one extra match per round. It has nothing to do with location.

League could put teams in Adelaide and Perth tomorrow, and get the same TV rights increase as they'd get from CC and SEQ. Difference is crowds, increase in TV audience, increased harvesting of sponsorship.

What exactly makes you think Adelaide would be harder to crack than Melbourne? All three of Adelaide's pro football teams were started in the last 20 years ('90, '97, '03), it's not like they have had a stranglehold over the city for generations like the AFL in Melbourne.

The fact that the lower grade sports are getting more attention is just showing us that they're hungry for something different from the two comps that they are represented in currently.

Of course it is... 10,000 people in Adelaide watching the NRL is better for the game than 10,000 in Penrith. It'd be worth tens of millions of dollars more in tv deals and advertising revenue for the game.

Umm, how?

Soccer probably doesn't belong in a direct comparison but with the winter codes. I just put it in for the sake of completeness.

Fair enough, probably the wise idea - especially regarding junior resources.

Umm, how?

Opening a new TV market with potentially 3.5million new viewers, of course it only potential, but what else does Ch9 show on a Sat and Sun afternoon in WA and SA? The viewing figures are very low for those time slots atm and so with an NRL club to build interest in the code it is feasible that viewing figures in either city for the Ch that is showing RL would increase significantly in those time slots.

Sponsors like the idea that a sport is shown on FTA nationally. Having an NRL team in a state will increase the likelyhood of that happening. Why do the AFL get bigger sponsorship deals than the NRL at both a Comp and club level?

OK L4P, you inspired me!

Took this off Wikipedia, subtracted the CC from Sydney's stats. INcluded Auckland, Geelong and Wellington to get a proper comparison accross the 4 codes in Australia and NZ.

Code:
City popn. nrl afl s12 al TOTAL
Sydney 4138374 8.5 1 1 1 11.5
Melbourne 3806092 1 9 0 1 11
Brisbane 1857594 1 1 1 1 4
Perth 1554769 0 2 1 1 4
Auckland 1313200 1 0 1 0 2
Adelaide 1158259 0 2 0 1 3
Gold Coast 583657 1 0 0 1 2
Newcastle 523662 1 0 0 1 2
Canberra 388072 1 0 1 0 2
Wellington 381900 0 0 1 1 2
Central Coast 298000 1 0 0 1 2
Wollongfong 280159 0.5 0 0 0 0.5
Geelong 169544 0 1 0 0 1
Townsville 157174 1 0 0 1 2
This produces the following average pop per team:

Code:
 Auckland 656600
Wollongong 560318
Brisbane 464399
Perth 388692
Adelaide 386086
Sydney 359859
Melbourne 346008
Gold Coast 291829
Newcastle 261831
Canberra 194036
Wellington 190950
Geelong 169544
Central Coast 149000
Townsville 78587

Average across all cities and codes = 321267. The average per team in Sydney and Melbourne is above this.

Interesting that Auckland's average doubles Sydney and Melbourne - they just punted an AL geague club from there. Wollongong came second, and the Steelers and Wolves (old NSL) no longer exist.

The only thing that this proves is that other forces exist that influence a teams potential crowd in their area.

And the Sunshine coast has a pop of 290645.

Good work Loudstrat

with such a high pop per team I am surprised Woolongong didn't have the support to be a stand alone? Is it related more to lack of corporate support for a team?

Dunno, considering it's not national - only in 6 locations that hug the coast.

NRL is international, BTW.

Probably because AFL doesn't have to pay back heaps of money from a war they didn't ask for nor start.

That has something to do with it. Would be nice for the traitor clubs to pay back the ARL's funds.

Got a nice Australia Day present in the post. 3 Bears stickers from the Central Coast Supporters Group - proclaiming the Red and Black Army. Great stuff!

Got the Kids confused as to why an Eels supporter would be chuffed with such a gift, though!

Promotion. Take note, Reds fans.
