Holmes in line to replace Gregan
Peter Fitzgerald
NSW Waratahs scrumhalf Josh Holmes is set to become George Gregan's replacement at the ACT Brumbies in 2008.
The Canberra Sunday Times can reveal Brumbies coaching staff have met with Holmes to discuss the possibility of him relocating to Canberra next season to join Patrick Phibbs and Luke Burgess as the side's No9s.
The Brumbies will lose veterans Gregan, Stephen Larkham and Jeremy Paul to retirement at the end of the season but chief executive Andrew Fagan was adamant the club would remain a Super 14 force next year and beyond.
Holmes has played third fiddle at the Waratahs this season, coach Ewen McKenzie opting for Josh Valentine and Brett Sheehan as his first-choice scrumhalves.
But with Phibbs and Burgess both off contract with the Brumbies at season's end, Holmes sees an opportunity to potentially earn himself a starting position with the ACT. Fagan, who flew out of the national capital with the players and coaching staff for their three-match tour of South Africa this morning, welcomed Holmes' interest and was confident of snaring the 20-year-old's signature.
The club is also deep in talks with Cape Town Stormers forward Huia Edmonds, who they hope to sign shortly after returning from overseas next month.

Looks like the Brumbies' proud tradition of supplying the Australian scrumhalf is set to continue... Holmes is a very, very, very talented young player and should be wearing the Australian number 9 for years to come.
