Kogarah Council have confirmed that the Jubilee Oval Community Appeal (JOCA) has been wound up. JOCA was launched in December 2002 following the Dragons decision to return to the St.George district in response to intense lobbying from supporters.
JOCA received $2.4 million of contributions throughout its lifetime. The $2.4 million was comprised of:
$923,000 St.George Leagues Club
$800,000 NSW State Government
$315,000 Kogarah Council
$152,000 Supporter Donations/Business In-Kind Donations
$110,000 OKI Australia
$50,000 Rockdale Council
$50,000 Hurstville Council
While discussions are reportedly underway regarding the future direction of the management of matters previously managed by JOCA, its disappointing that the appeal has been wound up without any communication to the supporters who contributed to the fund.
R2K contacted Dragons management in February 2004 to confirm the future direction of JOCA. To this date, a response has not been forthcoming, so R2K contacted Kogarah Council who confirmed that JOCA, as it was originally set up, has been wound up. Kogarah Council have also confirmed that there is no formal plan of management for Kogarah Park.
The demise of JOCA comes before Oki Jubilee Stadium has acquired permanent lighting and additional seating at the Jubilee Avenue and English Street sides of the ground. Despite the cessation of JOCA, these enhancements to the ground are still achievable and its up to Dragons supporters to lobby St.George-Illawarra and Kogarah Council to ensure that these improvements become a reality.
