Cronulla club under investigation
15:52 AEST Tue May 25 2004

A Cronulla Sharks junior rugby league club will be investigated over a planned fundraising night that was to involve strippers and a sex show.

The Cronulla-Caringbah Junior Rugby League Football Club had planned to hold a fundraiser for its A-grade side on May 14 where the lucky door prize was to be a lesbian stage show and oral sex.

Sharks senior football club president Barry Pierce put a stop to the show after being contacted by Sutherland Shire Mayor Kevin Schreiber and federal MP Bruce Baird following an article in the local newspaper.

Police also advised the junior club not to go ahead with the night. A barbecue was held instead.

Cronulla Sutherland District Junior Rugby League (CSDJRL) president Bob Gorick said "in hindsight" the show was probably a bad idea and an investigation was underway.

"(The show) was off before it started ... there's an ongoing inquiry about it all," Mr Gorick said.

"At the moment, we've got prima facie evidence ... (but) nothing actually happened.

"It's detrimental to junior rugby league, it brings the game into disrepute."

Mr Gorick declined to speculate on any possible punishment for the Cronulla-Caringbah club, saying he didn't want to prejudice the CSJDRL's inquiry.

Mr Pierce said the incident was unacceptable.

"I was told by the mayor and MP that this was supposed to involve strippers," Mr Pierce said.

"I made some inquiries and found out it was Cronulla Caringbah (putting on the show).

"I then called the president of the junior rugby league and told him this wasn't going to be tolerated.

"It was cancelled by the lunchtime (on the day it was discovered)."

In a separate statement, Sharks general manager Steve Rogers denied earlier reports the function had been set up for an under-17 team.

Is this your come-back for Gasnier? That incident isnt really related to Cronulla sharks anyway, they didnt organise it or anything. The only thing they did was the right thing, stop it from occuring. Responsible club
