Game was Origin-like. Hopefully it's the catalyst for more Pacific Islanders opting to play for Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, etc. Instead of Qld/NSW/Australia/NZ.

If the NRL had any vision and ability to think and plan on the run they'd immediately organise an annual Tonga-New Zealand 3 game series - State of Origin style - to run concurrently with Origin.

But they won't...

What we need is comparable match-payments for islanders...

Although a fantastic result for the tournament we are getting a bit carried away. To be blatantly honest i doubt Tonga would ever win a test let alone a series in the above scenario.

This was a perfect storm, NZ weakened due to injuries, suspensions and defections and any Australian eligble players like fifita and tupou for example would be unlikely to not play origin if picked.

What needs to happen is the annual Pacific cup involving Tonga Samoa Fiji and PNG concurrently with origin as well as NZ/ENG. Additionally a proper test calendar involving more opportunities for T2 nations to play the big 3 more often. The pay discrepency needs to also be bridged.

Do that for a sustained period and it will hopefully result in playing for the pacific nations as not being seen as 2nd best to AUS/NZ and results like today will occur more often.

The point of my post was not to put down the tongan performance but rather was for us all to not get carried away and to find a way to cultivate the team (as well as other pacific nations) in a manner which sees them maintain its best players and be this competitive more often. Given JT said he chose Tonga because he was too pissed to answer Kidwell's calls it looks like it is a topic worth discussing.
