Kangaroos Matches Lost Since the 80's

Following the Kangaroo's 12th World Cup title and third in a row. I thought I post some interesting stats about their record since the beginning of the 80's.

They've lost only 25 matches in the last 42 years (since 1980)
  • 15 times to NZ
  • 9 times to GB / England (GB 8, England 1)
  • 1 time to Tonga
They lost 4 times in the 80's (3 NZ, 1 GB)
They lost 9 times in the 90's (4 NZ, 4 GB, 1 England)
They lost 6 times in the 2000's (3 NZ, 3 GB)
They lost 6 times int the 2010's (5 NZ, 1 Tonga)

Pretty intimidating record. Here are some other interesting points:

  • The Kiwis have consistently been able to pick up the odd win over the Kangaroos with their wins slightly picking up in the 2010's after the Warriors were introduced in 2005 and the pathways for Kiwi players improved.
  • GB / England fell away from the Kangaroos in the mid 2000’s, their last win was in 2006 but they haven’t had a problem posting regular wins against the Kiwis
  • The Kangaroos have only lost twice in the same year on two occasions during this period
    • 2014 against the Kiwis twice in the Four Nations tournament
    • 1997 where they lost to both NZ and GB
  • Their worst losing streak during this period was 2, the 2014 Four Nations Final and the 2015 Anzac Test, both against NZ

Fun fact: Kiwis versus Kangaroos games are now more competitive than All Blacks versus Wallabies games. Check out the win percentage over the past 15 years. England is more than capable of having a similar win percentage over Australia. They just keep getting the jitters.

Australia will be winning every conceivable game into the long term future.

Now other nations will be relying on the Australian state systems to develop players, further deterioration of national pathways will occur. Tenuous 'heritage' will reign supreme.

France are the only nation with any dignity.

England are the biggest joke of all, couldn't beat a hole in wet cardboard.

Wales are rebuilding with mainly homegrown players and the PNG and Fiji production lines are only just beginning with the Silktails and Hunters, those two will be the next to join the big boys when it comes to being ultra competitive and they will be filled with players that are eligible for them and them only which will give both PNG and Fiji continuity in the national team. They will be dangerous in another 5 to 10 years

Add a second PNG team at state level now and in 10 years you’ll have enough extra players to fill another 3 or 4 new NRL expansion teams.

It would be great if the Hunters went back to New Britain and the Vipers, who claim they have the backing to rejoin the Hostplus Cup, would join as a second PNG side.

The PNGRFL could then work towards having a Lae team later on and would have their three core development hubs all in the QCup.
