The way forward for this sport is to grow the International game so we need to cut back on the domestic comps.

[... KANGAROOS skipper Cameron Smith wants more international rugby league, but admits the only way it’ll happen is to shorten the NRL season.

Smith believes the success of the Rugby League World Cup has whet the appetite for more Test matches in the future, particularly among the emerging nations.

However Smith, who is also the president of the Rugby League Players Association, is also wary of the commitment by the NRL and its players to the broadcasters....

“For me, that’s the simplest way to do it. But at the moment, we’ve got commitments to broadcasters and that’s fair enough,” Smith said....]

1. He should have said that when he was sat down with the NRL & RLPA for the last 12months..

And 2. Australia are taking a year off next year !!!

When he's on a high coming off a World Cup win -- "More internationals"
When he's struggling from the exhaustion of the long season -- "Fewer internationals"

Creating a proper strategy for rugby league is too important to be left to the whims of the players, coaches and clubs.
