Kickoff specialist a thing of the past?

Possible rules change could force Buehler to win the job outright

David Buehler may have to beat out Kris Brown to keep his job anyway.

The Cowboys would prefer not to carry two kickers, thus burning a roster spot they could otherwise use for a position player. But a possible rules change could make kickoff specialists a thing of the past.

The NFL is considering moving back kickoffs from the 30 to the 35-yard line. A touchback would result in the receiving team getting the ball at the 25-yard line, instead of the 20. Touchbacks would become far easier, and teams likely would rely on their field-goal kicker to kickoff.

Buehler led the league with 29 touchbacks as a rookie in 2009 when he was a kickoff specialist. He had 22 last season when he had both jobs. Buehler went only 24 of 32 on field goals and missed two PATs last season, which prompted the Cowboys to sign Brown late last season.

In 12 seasons, Brown, a Southlake Carroll product, has made 77.3 percent of his kicks. He attemped only five last season as a temporary fill in with the Chargers after being released by the Texans.

Yes it will increase the number of touchbacks, but it will also decrease the number of kick returns.

wait so having more touchbacks will result in less kickoff returns? are you sure there mate?

part of the nfl safety bs they are trying to implement, also pretty sure that they are looking to class a QB in the motion of passing defenseless player as well which is a lot of garbage, like it is already skewed to the offense in attack

Two points here.

1. With the kickoffs being taken a further 5 yards up field from the 35yd line it will mean a lot more of the kicks will now travel in to the end zone. Which should lead to the KR taking a knee and accepting the re-start from the 20yd line. A touchback.

A lot of kicker have become rather skillful at getting their kickoffs in to the end zone, even when kicking from the 30 yard line. How good are they going to be at it when kicking a further 5 yards up field.

2. Taking the kickoffs from the 35 yard line brings the defense a lot closer to the kick returner.

The other part of the rule change is the defending team can’t have a 10-15 yard running start, the players will only allowed to be 5 yards behind the 35 yard line so this could still allow for returns.
