Rabbitohs halfback Eddie Paea says he has come back a more confident and determined player from his time with the New Zealand Test squad.
Paea was a late inclusion in the Kiwis squad for the tour of the Britain and France. The 19-year-old former Mascot Jets junior did not make his Test debut on the tour but said it was an invaluable experience nonetheless.
It was a great tour and it has changed the way I look at things, Paea said.
It makes you realise how hard you have to train to be an elite player. Those blokes do all the extras. And training alongside guys like that has helped my own game. (Wigan halfback) Thomas Leuluai was one guy I learnt a lot from.
Paea made his NRL debut for the Rabbitohs against the Tigers at Leichhardt Oval in the final round in 2006 from the interchange bench. He made his NRL run-on debut this year in the round 19 win over the Cowboys at Telstra Stadium and also played in the round 20 win over the Titans and the round 21 loss to the Panthers.
During the season Paea represented NSW u19s and the Junior Kiwis, playing a starring role in wins for both sides. He said his experiences in 2007 and his time overseas has only strengthened his motivation and desire to continue his progression as a footballer in 2008.
It has made me a more confident player, he said.
When you go on a trip like that it makes you want to get the chance again and experience it again. And after what happened, it was a disappointing tour in terms of the results, I want to help the boys get back on track. There is a World Cup at the end of the season and Ill definitely be trying my hardest to be in the running again. It was disappointing not to get a run in one of the Tests but I am using that as motivation. I want to play in the NRL as much as I can in 2008.
Paea also said the chance to see parts of England and France added to the enjoyment of the tour.
I was surprised when they rang me to tell me to pack my bags, I didnt know what to say. I was getting ready for the pre-season and then I was just so buzzed about going on the tour, he said.
It was a good trip, Ive never been to England, it was fun and great to experience, it was pretty cold though and France was even colder, we went to Disneyworld and we were on the rollercoaster when it was three degrees.
