The Newcastle Pepsi Knights travelled to Sydneys west yesterday where they were looking for their 9th win of the season and trying to maintain their number one position on the ladder. The Knights opened the scoring in the 5th minute through a try to fullback Sam Wooden and after Scott Dureau added the extras, the Knights led 6-0. Knights centre Jonathon Wright extended the visitors lead out to 10 in the 15th minute, after taking an intercept and racing 80 metres, scoring out wide. Dureau failed to add the extras, but the Knights had a handy lead. A few minutes later the Knights extended their lead further when winger Frank Paranthoiene crossed for the first of his hat-trick and Dureau converted to give the table-topping Knights a handy lead of 16-0. In the 28th minute, the Magpies scored their first try of the afternoon, a brilliant backline movement, finished off by interchange player Ashley Haare. Brendan Waters converted the try and after Dureaus penalty goal on the stroke of halftime, the Knights went to the break, in control at 18-6.
The second half started much the way the first ended, with Magpies five-eight Aaron De Gois cutting the Knights lead to just a converted try after Waters successfully converted. The Knights then found themselves in a closer match than many thought, but Paranthoiene gave the Knights some breathing space and a 22-12 lead with half an hour remaining. Sam Wooden put the match out of the Magpies reach when he scored the Knights second of four tries in a 15 minute blitzkrieg just after the Magpies got back into the match. Dureau had no problems adding the two points and in the 52nd minute, fired a perfect cut out pass onto the chest of Cory Patterson who crashed over, putting any hopes of a Magpie revival to rest. The Knights finished the match with two more tries, one to winger Paranthoiene, completing his hat-trick and Dureau took another Magpie intercept and raced 60 metres to score out wide, completing a man of the match performance by the young halfback. Dureau scored a try and kicked 6 goals in the Knights 46-18 rout of the Magpies, keeping their number one spot on the ladder and looking like genuine premiership threats.
Next week the Knights host the Raiders in a match which will see the Knights missing Corey Paterson, Jacob Ling and Jon Tupou. All players are playing in the under 19s curtain raiser for NSW before State Of Origin one. Matt Cooper from the Knights is also a shadow player.
