After having last weekend off to recharge the batteries, the Newcastle Knights Jersey Flegg side continued on their remarkable 2006 season on Saturday afternoon. The Knights, now four points clear at the top of the table, accounted for a sometimes tenacious and gritty Cronulla Sharks 50 points to 12. Although the Knights ran over the top of the Sharks in the final 20 minutes, they didn’t all have it their own way.

After five minutes of play, Knights centre Callan Richardson crossed for the first points of the afternoon. Halfback Scott Dureau’s conversion from out wide was unsuccessful, but the Knights would play from in front. In the thirteenth minute of play, the Sharks hit back through fullback Isaac Gordon who crossed beside the posts. Hooker Craig Priestley had no problems adding the extras to put the Sharks in front 6-4. Five minutes later, Knights second rower Cory Patterson steamed onto a perfectly timed cut-out pass from halfback Dureau and scored 5 metres in from touch. Again Dureau was unsuccessful with the conversion. The Sharks continued to throw the ball around and again hit the front through five-eight Zac Mullane who ran through some flimsy Knights defence to score beside the posts. Priestly successfully converted to give the Sharks a 12-8 lead, nearing halftime. Unfortunately for the visitors that was going to be as good as it got as the Knights went on a 42-point scoring spree. Tries before halftime to five-eight Simon Allen, whose partnership with Dureau in the halves appears to be improving with every game, along with a try to fullback Stephen Gordon on the stroke of halftime had the Knights leading 20-12 at the break.

Gordon added to his personal tally early in the second half when he scored his second try of the afternoon. This try put any doubts about a possible Cronulla comeback out of the equation. The Knights appeared to be enjoying themselves as they came to the realisation that their undefeated record was going to remain intact. Lock forward Jon Tupou scored his first try of the afternoon, touching down with thirteen minutes remaining. This try sparked a four-tries-in-thirteen-minutes romp as the Knights went up a gear. First it was Tupou who got himself on the scoresheet. This was followed by blockbusting front rower Timmy Natusch who stormed over under the posts. Receiving the ball 10 metres out from the Sharks line, no-one was going to stop Natusch as he carried four Sharks defenders over before slamming the ball down in delight. Second rower Patterson made it a total of fourteen points for the forwards when Dureau handed the goal-kicking duties over. Four minutes from full-time, Dureau added a try along with six goals for a personal tally of 16 points for the afternoon. And ninety seconds from fulltime Natusch had himself a double, again crashing over under the posts and adding another try, a fourth, to the forwards contribution of the team total. Dureau, who had the goalkicking duties handed back to him by Patterson made the Knights total an even 50 as they cruised home, winning 50-12.

For the Knights, it was a great team effort, with special mention going to Tim Natusch for his two-try effort, along with Cory Patterson, Jon Tupou and Jacob Ling. There was not a bad player on the field for the Knights as their season continues to get better.

Next Friday afternoon the Knights travel to Brookvale Oval to take on the seventh-placed Manly Sea Eagles.
