Preview: Knights v Raiders

Sportal

Venue & Time: EnergyAustralia Stadium, 7:00pm AEST, Monday June 18
Head To Head: Played 27, Raiders 16, Knights 10, draws 1
Last Time: Raiders 48 - Knights 18 at Canberra Stadium, round 3, 2007
Walking Wounded:
The Knights have lost makeshift co-captain Kirk Reynoldson for up to eight weeks with a knee injury, while centres recruit Luke MacDougall is in doubt with a triceps injury. But in a massive boost, both Jarrod Mullen (calf) and Kurt Gidley (shoulder) return to the side, along with prop Adam Woolnough (leg).
Players unavailable for the Raiders include centre Phil Graham (knee - round 17), second-rower Matt Bickerstaff (knee - round 16), centre Adrian Purtell (deep vein thrombosis - indefinite) and utility back Brett Kelly (ankle - round 15).
Form:
The Knights are to be commended for the way they competed against the Tigers on Sunday minus several stars to either injury or Origin duty. The loss of Reynoldson after 11 minutes certainly didn't help their cause nor did MacDougall's injury which resulted in a two-man bench for the entire second half. We must also not overlook the fact that some of the Newcastle players were forced out of their homes last weekend due to the unkind weather.
The Raiders responded to the disappointment of their round 12 loss to the Titans in stunning fashion to bury the Eels within 12 minutes at Canberra Stadium on Saturday night. In that period they posted a staggering 24 points to set up a comprehensive 38-10 victory over a team that had just come off an equally dominating display against the Tigers. The win pushes this youthful Canberra side back into the top eight, much to the dismay of the many who had labeled them certain wooden-spooners.
Who's Hot:
For the Knights, young centre Brad Tighe performed the best Steve Renouf impression of all-time last Sunday when he produced a brilliant right foot step at full pace to wrong-foot several Tigers defenders for a try. This was just one of two four-pointers in the match for Tighe, who made 10 tackle busts and 173m in his best NRL performance to date.
The Raiders had many stars last week, but the form of talented utility Terry Campese was of particular interest. This kid has had big wraps on him since he came into the top grade and it appears he is now starting to realise that potential given greater responsibility this season. He was everywhere against the Eels, scoring a try, setting another couple up and making six tackle busts.
Who's Not:
Last Sunday was meant to be a big occasion for Reynoldson given it was his first shot at captaining an NRL team in his 100-game career. Unfortunately his joy would soon turn to pain his leg buckled under two defenders in the early stages of the game. He left the field in agony and it appeared his season would be over, but the most recent diagnosis has him back on the paddock in two months.
For the Raiders, big prop Michael Weyman needs to take a chill pill. First he puts Eels prop Josh Cordoba to sleep with a nasty high shot, then he follows that up with a series of punches on Mark Riddell in retaliation for a run of the mill sledge. He will now spend three weeks on the sidelines to ponder his

Key Match-Ups:
Luke Walsh v Michael Dobson
Danny Buderus v Lincoln Withers
Josh Perry v Scott Logan

Like to See:
The Raiders put together quality back-to-back performances. They are yet to really impress in consecutive matches this season despite performing well above expectations on the whole.

Wouldn't Like to See:
The Knights without Origin stars Buderus and Simpson following Wednesday night's Origin. They really need their experienced guys on deck.

We Think:
If Buderus and Simpson can return to the Knights side then that should give them the edge on a Raiders team, that doesn't perform well on the road and struggles to produce quality games in succession. The Knights showed last week they have plenty of spirit and the return of a couple of key men in Mullen and Gidley should only improve their chances. Knights by 8.

Knights v Raiders Preview
Wednesday, June 13, 2007 - 12:15 PM

The last time these two sides met the rugby league world had no idea we were seeing the exit of the mercurial Andrew “Joey” Johns, but it was indeed his final swansong.

The 48-18 hammering in favour of the Raiders back in round three still has the Knights seeing red and although a win this Monday won’t rewrite the history books, it will ease some of the pain.

The Newcastle region has copped a hammering by the wild weather this past week and while they are suffering, they know how to band together as a group. One thing they do well is support their team.

The Knights know the region needs a lift and they’ll be hell-bent on providing one.

Currently the two sides sit in eighth and ninth spot, with the Raiders in front on percentages alone so a result is crucial to remaining in the play-off zone.

Watch out Knights: The Raiders have spent the week moving their attack down the right sideline of the field knowing full well the Knights have conceded 14 tries in this corridor, the worst of any NRL side.

They also have provided far more dominant tackles than the Knights with 271 (second in NRL) to 189 (16th).

Watch out Raiders: Despite being the worst side in the competition at scoring tries from kicks with a paltry two, the Knights’ halves have been doing extra work on the paddock knowing the Raiders are the worst team in the NRL at stopping tries from the boot – they have leaked 16 already this year.

Where it will be won: In the Raiders’ preparation. Sounds silly? It shouldn’t. The Raiders are the hot and cold team of the NRL. One week they are dismantling highly fancied sides like the Eels last week, or another they are being humbled themselves – usually away from home.

The Knights have been on a win/loss pattern since round four so they are due a win but it could all depend on which Canberra side fronts.

The History: Played 27, Knights 10, Raiders 16, drawn 1. The Raiders have won five of the past eight against the Knights, including a 48-18 shellacking in round three this year.

Conclusion: It really is a lottery whenever the Raiders play, but you tend to lean away from them when they are on the road. They are better at finishing off line breaks than their counterparts – both sides have 52 this year but the Raiders have scored 47 tries compared to the Knights 38.

The Knights have been far from convincing in recent weeks but they are hoping for some big name players to return to the fold on Monday and the emotion surrounding the region might be enough to inspire them alone. Captain Danny Buderus is scheduled to play his 200th first grade game, which will ensure players and fans alike are fired up.

The home side will have to really muscle up in defence because the Raiders can certainly score points and the Knights have conceded more tries from 50+ metres (11) and 21-50 metres (13) than any other club, and their 25 conceded from within 10 metres is equal 15th. If they can arrest these deficiencies in “D” they can win.

Televised: Foxsports 3 – Live 7pm

Knights v Raiders
Monday 18th June
EnergyAustralia Stadium (7.00pm AEST)
Referee: Shayne Hayne
Video Referee: Steve Clark
Sideline Officials: Michael Jones & Steve Carrall

HEAD TO HEAD
Knights 10 wins, Raiders 16 wins, 1 draw.

FORM GUIDE
Knights: WWLLWLWLWBLWL
Raiders: LLWLWLWLWBWLW

The Knights went close to upsetting the highly placed Tigers last week and will be boosted with the return of injured playmakers Kurt Gidley and Jarrod Mullen.

If there was ever a time when a city needed a win - it is now and it is Newcastle. The city has been bashed and battered by a devastating natural disaster but Novocastrians are a passionate bunch, and they will band together to support their team.

The words 'form' and 'Raiders' should never again be used in the same sentence. Flip a coin, draw straws - do anything but just don't read the form guide. Match location is the only thing to consider here and on those grounds, this doesn't bode well for the men from Canberra.

The Raiders may have out-gunned the Eels to the tune of 38-10 on home soil last week, but they were terrible away from home against the Titans the round earlier.

THE BURNING QUESTION
Will the return of Mullen and Gidley spark a welcome victory for a troubled city?

KEY MATCH UPS
Jarrod Mullen v Terry Campese

COACHES CORNER
The Raiders are clearly a confidence team and the first ten or twenty minutes of this clash could go a long way to determining the end result. Brian Smith will be looking for aggressive defence in this period.

If his men can out-muscle the Raiders early, the Newcastle backline should find holes in the 3rd worst defensive unit in the NRL.

Canberra were all over the Eels for the entire first half last week, and contributing to this is a strong kick chase. Michael Dobson and Campese were finding open spaces behind the Parramatta line and often led the chase to shut down the kick return.

Kurt Gidley is not the type of player Neil Henry will want returning the ball against a scattered defence - the Raiders will need to focus on limiting his time and space.

Rookie Newcastle halfback Luke Walsh has been impressive in both of his NRL showings and should compliment Mullen perfectly with a similar style of play.

Mullen has always expressed an interest in playing wider of the ruck and his move to five-eight should have the Newcastle backline looking dangerous.

PUNTERS GUIDE
The return of several key playmakers will have the Knights firing on Monday night and the Raiders are a different team on the road.

The TAB are offering a short $1.45 for a Newcastle victory but we are tipping a big score from Brian Smith's men. Take the Knights 13+ in the margins and pocket a sneaky $2.60 for every dollar you lay down.

Alternatively the Newcastle halftime / Newcastle fulltime option is paying $1.90 and may be a safer option.

Raider's fullback William Zillman has notched up eight tries in 2007 and if Canberra can get out of the blocks like they did against the Eels, Zillman might be the pick for first try scorer - the TAB are offering $12.

To me this will be a watershed game in Knights history.
We get to see the 1,6,7, and 9 that could be the basis of a golden age for the team for the very first time.
If these guys come together like a well oiled machine we could score anything.

the Knights have conceded 14 tries in this corridor, the worst of any NRL side.

Not hard to fathom when you know that its Doogs defending on that wing. Hopefully Carmont can direct doogs in defence.

I can't believe i said that... i feel so dirty.

Theyve tipped us to get our biggest win of the season.

Cant argue with that :)

Well I hope they're right about that. We need a rather large victory to boost our For & Against.

Also noticed that they're having that Andrew Johns Stand Mates Rate promotion. Obviously a way of trying to get more people in on a Monday Night.

Theres always a divide between fan and coach view. I'd suspect most fans don't want Carmont, just that he is the lesser evil of the more likely options. Personally I'd want Bailey, Franze or Uate probably in that order above him.

Uate might not get used this year due to salary cap pressure

We bought both Luke MacDougall and Cooper Vuna mid-season. What makes you think we have salary cap pressure? At least not to the extent that Uate would not be able to play because of it.

I suppose we will have to start using guys like Tanner and Carmont who are on fixed salaries over guys on incentive contracts. I don't know who is on what contract, but we have used a lot of guys this year so far who probably get extra for playing firstgrade - but then again - we have all that Johns money left over - so maybe we are sweet whoever we use.

Well I don't think that the Newcastle Herald would have published it in today's paper for no reason.

It's the 2nd-tier salary cap money.
The club has already spent close to the funding limit allocated to players outside the top 25 .
Clubs are permitted to spend $350,000 each season on players who are NOT officially recognised as members of the top 25 but appear in the NRL.

Each time a new 2nd-tier player is used in the nrl ,the value of his contract is added onand if it succeds the limit $350,000,his club attracts a breach notice and probable fine.

The Knights have already used 35 in 1st Grade beacuase of injuries and retirements. They have already dipped heavily into their premierleague squad and have little room for manoeuvre for the rest of the season.
