I realise this is a bit of a cheeky question, but now that Craig Smith looks like he'splayed his last game inthe NRL, are there any NZ-borncaucasians leftasfirst choice playersin the comp? Craig Smith is 100% white, isn't he?I'm pretty sure his skin colour is justthe result of living inahouse by the beachinOz.
As much as I love supportingthe new breed of young players coming into the Warriors and Kiwis these days, I'd hate to think the likes of Freeman, McCracken, Halligan and co. were the last of their kind.There arestill plenty of caucasian Kiwis that are ardent supporters of the game (guys on this forum, the Mad Butcher,commentator Allen McLoughlin,a lotof theEricsson crowd), so what arethe reasons behindthe current absence? AreKiwi europeans playing the game todayjust lessnaturally gifted footballers, whereastheir Aussie equivalent provides the majority of the game's stars? Is it"white flight" timidness?Is the loyalty to rugby union stronger for most white people?
If we're ever going to match it with the Aussies, I don't think we can let league be the Kiwi equivalent of White Men Can't Jump in the future. Unlike Americans and basketball, I definitely don't wantKiwikidsof any raceto bewearing XXXL Warriors jerseys, sitting on the couchstuffing their faces as theypoke funat the rare sight of a person their own skin colour!
