Walters? Bahahahah! Everyone knows Smith and Cronk have co coached Qld for the last 10 years.

Mal and Kevvie were just puppets.
dude, by that logic, gibson, ryan, bennett, fulton etc were puppets. after all they had;

sterling & kenny
mortimer & lamb
langer & walters
toovey & lyons

it would seem on the surface that meninga & walters are puppets, but as the above crowd will attest to, you cannot win without talent.

when you have it, you then have to make it work. keeping them motivated season after season is a pretty big achievement when they're already legends & have tasted just about every success available in the game.

Well said, also Walters has never been accused of a puppet. It was Meninga who some people in the media said that the brains behind the operation were his assistants Michael Hagan and Neil Henry. Then some have come on this forum and have taken this out of contexts and have said that in anyone who coaches Queensland is a puppet because they have Cooper Cronk and Cameron Smith. Its just so ridiculous.

Give Raudonikis the gig again. May not win us a series but you know he's going to slap the shit out of someone.
He would only be the mouth piece. Assistants to do the actual coaching. The build up would be awesome, he would be firing the boys right up, and we would likely see a blue! Best idea for coach yet!

A Johns and fittler shared position is surely the way to go? Johns could shout at the team and make them cry and Fittlerr could tell them jokes and cheer them up. Perfect.

Feel sorry for Laurie, people underestimate just how unique this Qland spine is and how we may never ever see their like again all come through at the same time. I doubt any NSW coach would have done any better. As a neutral its been a privilege watching Slater, Thurston, Cronk and Smith grace the footy field together for all these years and we should all feel very lucky we follow the game at a time we got the chance to see arguably the best players ever in their key positions in one team.
The only series he won was with Hodkinson / Reynolds as the halves, the following year he drops Reynolds and brings Pearce back; Laurie is a moron.

That one year they won was off the back of QLDs stars all carrying injuries and out of form, plus Cronk broke his arm first game.

It was more the backs to the wall defence in the first two games that won us that series. Plus Hayne was on fire. The Josh Morris shut down of Inglis with a buggered shoulder was particularly great. Then there was the one great play Hodkinson has ever pulled off in his career, which will make me love him forever, no matter how bog average he is.

I remember when Raudonkis had the job (1997, 1998) there were complaints from critics that he was overweight and he smoked and they didn't think he was the best face for the game. Laurie Daley said at the time though the players loved playing for him.

Raudonkis did pretty well to get what he could out of Wests who didn't have the money of other teams to compete but they did make the finals once. When Wests and Balmain merged both coaches Raudonkis and Wayne Pearce put their hand up for the job, problem for Tommy his team the previous season got the wooden spoon. Tigers went with Pearce.

Ironically he said on the Footy Show tonight he would be keen take the NSW job on again (in tongue and cheek). I know previously when the position was open he has expressed interest in the position but I can't quite remember when that was.

Do players at that level actually need coaching? Or is it just pulling them together as a team and getting them to bust a ballsack to win at all costs?

They need leadership more than anything. It was the difference between Qld under Mick Hagan vs Qld under Mal Meninga, and it was the most notable difference this series. A coach who had more respect/ fear out of the players would've prepared NSW much better for Game 3. Any idiot could've told them that Qld would throw everything at them in the opening half, that the key to winning would be the battle of attrition in the last 20 minutes, that NSW had to be patient, complete sets and not give away stupid penalties. Which tells you a lot about Daley...

Bring Jabba back, a perfect fit for his resume with Qld about to enter a rebuild . . . then again, how would Loz go with The Maroon Magnificent Four gone to pasture

Still doesn't discount the other things Walters has on his resume. The changes he made for Game 2 were important, and you largely forget also that Queensland were given no chance to win after game 1. I love people that re-write history suggesting 'Oh I knew Queensland was going to win the series after game 1" when it wasn't the case.

Not re writing history at all. That series was NSW to win and they blew it. But it doesnt change the fact Smith and Gronk are the real coaches of this Qld team.

Ffs Cam was also part of the selection panel that turfed DCE....

The best players know who their contemporaries are, they don't need coaching at this level, selecting the right blend is all that matters

In terms of coaching, do people forget Laurie Daley's tenure as Coaching Director at St George-Illawarra during the Nathan Brown years in the early-mid 2000s? He was still on NRL on Fox and a commentator during that time. He would talk up every Dragons player ,regardless of whether they were very talented or bog average, as if they were immortals. Says it all really.
