Lead up to 2012 kick off (trial observations, thoughts, rumours, etc)

Hey guys,

With the season kick off not too far away, thought we should have a general thread covering everything as we prepare for 2012.

Saw the trial result last night, anyone watch the game? If so who were the stand outs? I heard Blake Austin played well, I wonder if he is under any consideration for the 5/8 position or whether at best he will get a bench spot.

Curious to see too who locks up the wing and centre spots

Without watching the game. I heard Austin, Earl & Johnson were standouts. JTK played plenty of backrow. I would start Austin in the backrow on the right doing the role Lewis does on the left.

I am heading up to Port this week so can get 1st hand info. Hopefully it clears up so we have a decent run. Last night was a mud bog. I would expect a full strength team except for the 2 All Stars. The Parra trial will be the one that will so us the number 1. The backline etc for Round 1.

Yeah. I just know someone that went. Earl scored a length of the field try from a scrum. Mansour scored off an Austin grubber. Austin scored a smart try with a dummy & a step to beat his opposite.

The insider mail from Kilkenny's source is Evrett Vaurasi will make his NRL debut at some point in 2012. Has the talent and ability and is making good progress apparently. He is the late mail bolter and not mentioned previously anywhere but thats the tip.

Honestly, I don't think we will do that bad.

We have a very similar playing style with the Warriors, i.e we like to spread the ball through our offloads and we have very quick ball carriers.

With Cleary, he would instill abit of discipline with our penalties and he would drill into the players head not to make unnecessary offloads.

I think we would be okay.

I've seen a bit of Vaurasi but not enough to speak specifics. But I'm pretty sure he drifts between prop and second row. So he'd have some experience playing centrally. That being the case if he's going as well as you say Kilkenny, he'd have a real good shot at starting in our backrow as the tight forward. Plum leave's a bit of a void there and most of our other backrowers are edge forwards.

Walsh produced a sublime display at Centrebet Stadium on Friday night, leading the Panthers to a 26-10 win over the Parramatta Eels in 'The Battle of the West' trial.
His control of the game was a feature of the performance but Walsh revealed after the match to www.penrithpanthers.com.au that despite Penrith having their third head coach in under a year, he welcomed the game plan instituted by new coach Ivan Cleary.

"I find it pretty easy. We haven't got much of a game plan actually, Ivan's just told us to play what you see and that's how it should be.

"That suits our game and it suits our team."

I wouldn't be surprised if Cleary was focussing on getting our defence and discipline right before bringing more complicated plays into it. The team clearly didn't cope with Elliotts 'complicated' plays.
