League great to watch tourney
Parramatta Eels will send Queensland's former rugby league great Rod Reddy to Fiji to watch the bula.com tournament at Suva Grammar School next Tuesday.
Reddy, the Eels recruitment officer flies in on Monday. He is making a huge effort to come and watch the Fijian boys play.
In 1980 the State of Origin series started and Reddy played for his birth state QLD for the first time in the second row along side rugby league greats Mal Meninga, Wally Lewis, Chris Close, Kerry Boustead and Arthur Beetson.
They beat NSW 20-10 in front of 33,210 spectators at Lang Park now Suncorp Stadium in the inaugural match which started the future of rugby league. Reddy was contacted by Leon Cleal in Brisbane.
Leon is a development officer for the Eels based on the Sunshine Coast.
Bati coach Shane Morris and Leon has had several discussions about juniors in Fiji, especially the under-16. Leon took the U-16 boys for sessions when they were based at Bribie Island on a recent tour.
They discussed how the Fiji National Rugby League and Parramatta Eels could start helping each other out.
Reddy's visit to Suva is to be part of this tournament which is a big step in developing this relationship. Rod will be looking for potential talent.
He is here to also share his knowledge to all involved in the sport.
