TOOPI TO LEAVE VODAFONE WARRIORS TO PLAY IN ENGLISH SUPER LEAGUE
Experienced centre Clinton Toopi has decided to leave the Vodafone Warriors at the end of the 2006 NRL season to join English Super League club Leeds.
The 26-year-old Kiwi international, who has made 128 NRL appearances for the Vodafone Warriors since his debut against South Sydney in 1999, has signed a three-year contract with the Rhinos.
Toopi said he had been considering a move to the Super League competition for some time.
“My contract was up this year and, while I’ve loved playing for the Vodafone Warriors, I think this is the right time for me to move to a new environment,” he said.
“I considered options in the NRL but signing with Leeds was the best opportunity for me and for my family.
“I’m pleased to have this sorted out. It’ll be sad to leave but I want to get on with trying to give my best for the Vodafone Warriors for the rest of my time here.”
Vodafone Warriors CEO Wayne Scurrah said it wasn’t possible to retain Toopi in the face of substantial offers from English Super League clubs.
“Clinton’s been part of the Vodafone Warriors for eight seasons now and he’s obviously an appealing target for other clubs,” he said.
“We’re sad to see him go but the fact is clubs in the northern hemisphere are able to make offers that we simply can’t compete with.”
Toopi, who has also played 18 tests for New Zealand, has scored 57 tries for the Vodafone Warriors.
After being omitted from the side for the last two matches against Wests Tigers and Cronulla, he has been recalled on the interchange bench for Sunday’s clash against the Brisbane Broncos at Ericsson Stadium.
