Leichhardt council to allow AFL to be played at Birchgrove Oval

AFL is definitely shit scared of Soccer. Their reaction to the World Cup bid showed their true colours on that front.

They see Soccer as their only potential rival in their heartlands.

In Perth we regularly have used historic afl grounds to play RL on, was there equal outrage when the soccer posts went up? In terms of Jnrs soccer is a far greater threat than afl.
Another nothing story that once again fuels public perception that afl is taking over Sydney.

Ps I agree about the state of the plaque. It reflects how historically important the game sees the ground!

Lol, one of the most important grounds in the history of Rugby League (The SCG) has a full time AFL tenant and is barely used for rugby league and you choose to whinge about Birchgrove Oval of all places.

League gave up the SCG to AFL so why care about a suburban park?

wrong troll

League moved to the SFS which is rectangular when it was built

the Soccer mob are the ones who should be pissed here. the AFL is shit scared of the game as are the fans

over at Bigpoofy they evn set up a special sub forum in the AFL section where posters were tying to think of ways to scuttle te bid

even the AFL media fear it http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/get-your-hands-off-our-name/story-e6frf9if-1225846164142

That comparison is ridiculous.

There are hundreds if not thousands of ovals in Sydney that can host amateur afl.

At the time the swans came to town there was only one or two grounds capable of hosting pro vfl.

I'm pissed off for the soccer club - I reckon the AFL is against them as much as they are League, because soccer is the big junior sport in the west.

Spot on. I've always felt the AFL was a bigger threat to soccer in this city than League. League will always be the sport of choice for kids wanting a physical game (and parents who are ok with that) because AFL won't be anywhere near the most popular professional league in this city, and kids will always want to emulate their heroes. If the AFL wants to make headway it will come from kids who's parents won't let them play a full contact sport and see AFL as a compromise, a share of the market traditionally held by soccer.

It won't work. Soccer has enormous cultural significance in this city, with nearly every major immigration wave coming from countries that worship the game. It hasn't materialized into a thriving professional league (and may never do so) but it's well and truly got a stranglehold on junior participation.

Took 87 years to erect a plaque there.

The NSWRL never gave a flying f**k about that ground, or any ground really.

But as soon as the AFL goes near it, "Oh no, they can f**k off, its our heritage"

NRL turned its back on heritage and history years ago.

If they cared for the heritage of grounds, they'd fund a massive upgrade for Leichhardt oval. They would have paid in full, for upgrades to Kogarah, Brookvale, Belmore, Redfern and Parramatta over the years.

But they don't give a shit and they never will.

They want all teams playing in concrete jungles, pack more of us in so they can rape our wallets.

Only fans care about loyalty, heritage and history, no-one else does.

Furthermore, What has the NRL done to help preserve the Agricultural Showgrounds, Wentworth Park, St Lukes, Metters grounds etc?
