Super League season 2005 has a new club in it's midst, the Leigh Centurions and I will jump on this new flagship bringing as much news as I can to this site in an effort to spread the word for this team that now boasts a former team mate of mine one Mr James King who has been playing in the UK with Barrow for a year or two now.

CLUB HISTORY

Leigh Centurions have never been far away from the forefront of rugby league and were indeed one of the first pioneers of our sport and a founder member back in 1895.

Leigh is a community club that sits close to the hearts of the people in the town. Other teams such as Bradford Bulls may describe themselves as the "Peoples Team", but Leigh have been that for more than 100 years.

A brief look down the years fully justifies this point and the names that have graced the famous cherry and white hoops will never be forgotten.

Club Landmarks:

THE LEIGH CLUB'S RUGBY UNION HISTORY

1878 - Club founded. Initially played at Bucks Farm, Pennington.

1879 - Club moved to a new ground - The Three Crowns Field in Bedford.

1881 - With club standing growing every season Leigh took on additional fixtures against the likes of Walkden, Wigan and Tyldesley.

1881/82 - Albion Foundry team formed, many players joined new club but amalgamation saved the future of the Leigh club. Mr A. Warren replaced first secretary, Mr W Wright.

1886 - Leigh went through the season undefeated in 23 games. P. Taylor, a recognised county player joined the club.

1888 - Good form continued - Leigh lost just four games from 32. 'Doc' Worthington, a very fast and elusive threequarter who had the unusual honour of representing Lancashire at both rugby and football (or association rules) signed with Tom Coop from Tottington. Coop was regarded the finest player on Leigh's books and became a regular choice for Lancashire.

1889 - Leigh defeated the touring New Zealand Maori side. In September the club moved headquarters again, this time to Frog Hall Field, Mather Lane.

1892 - Tom Coop represented England against Scotland.

1894 - September 19th - Leigh are suspended for professionalism after Alfred Wallwork, a Wigan player who came to work in Leigh, started playing for the club after his removal expenses had been paid for by club officials. By the end of that season Salford and Wigan had also served suspension for similar offences. The game was strictly amateur at the time.

THE LEIGH CLUB'S RUGBY LEAGUE HISTORY

1895 - Leigh were one of the founder members of the Northern Union. The season kicked off in September with a 6-3 loss against Leeds. Leigh finish 9th overall.

1898-99 - The team hit the headlines with a magnificent 16-6 win over Batley in the Third Round of The Northern Union Cup. Batley had won the cup in its inaugural year and retained the trophy. Unfortunately a final appearance was denied by Oldham who won in the semi-final.

1899-1900 - A luckless season for Leigh. Star halfbacks Dunbavin and Molyneux miss the majority of the campaign. Dunbavin catches Typhoid Fever while Molyneux was unemployed and ineligible to play from December until February. Missing the guile of the midfield duo, points were a problem with only 5 tries scored in 17 games. Tom Smith and Tom Anderton, great club stalwarts call it a day.

1902-03 -Leigh go 22 matches without scoring a try! Club debts were cleared.

1903-04 - Dunbavin ruled out for the season after a 30 foot fall from a scaffold. Molyneux sold to Swinton for £50.

1904-05 - Leigh found guilty of a breach of the Working Clause. After beating Wigan in the First Round of the Northern Union Cup, The Northern Union Professional Sub-Committee ordered a replay. It had been alleged that Leigh player Silcock had been absent from work the week preceding the game. Without a permit, this was an offence. Wigan won the replay.

1905-06 - Leigh take part in the inaugural Lancashire Cup and win through to the final with Wigan, only to lose out in a replay. Glory followed however as Leigh are declared Northern Union champions following a superb season, boasting an 80% win rate.

1906-07 - First season of 13-a-side. W Smith scores a record five tries against Liverpool City and finished the season with 24 touchdowns. Molyneux returned to the club and finished top goal-kicker with 20.

1907-08 - Leigh host the New Zealand tourists and run out 15-9 victors before a crowd of some 8,000. The club went on to reach the semi-finals of the Northern Union Cup and Lancashire Cup.

1908-09 - The first Australian touring side tours Britain and Leigh pull off a shock 14-11 victory. Joseph Lavery becomes the first player from overseas to play for the club. Leigh finished 21st in the league.

1909 - Leigh reach a second Lancashire Cup Final only to lose once more to Wigan. Mick Bolewski, one of the stars of the Australian Tour, starts a three season stint with the club. He was the first overseas player to play 100 games. Leigh restarted their A team after several seasons break.

1910 - Consistent forward Billy Winstanley becomes Leigh’s first Australasian tourist.

1911-12 - Herbert Ganley transferred to Leeds for a record fee paid for a Leigh player at that time.

1915 - Competitive rugby is suspended for the duration of World War One.

1918 - Ruby resumes with an interim season running from January - May. Leigh finish 2nd.

1920 - Broughton Rangers snatch a third opportunity away from Leigh with a 6-3 victory in the Lancashire Cup Final.

1921 - With scrum-half Walter Mooney in fine form, Leigh win the Challenge Cup with a shock 13-0 win over Halifax at The Cliff, Broughton..

1922 - Lancashire Cup glory once again beckons for the club, only for Wigan to win 20-2.

1923 - Winger Reg Taylor creates a new season record with 24 touchdowns.

1924 - Jimmy France crosses for 30 tries to take the record. Joe Darwell and Walter Mooney tour Australasia with Great Britain.

1926 - New Zealand visit the town once more and emerge victorious in a hard game, 23-16.

1928 - Fullback Tommy Clarkson becomes the first Leigh player to kick 50 goals in a season.

1933 - Australia play Leigh and run out 16-7 victors before a crowd of 4,590.

1934 - Leigh play beneath floodlights for the first time, losing 8-25 at London Highfield.

1937 - The touring Australians beat Leigh 11-9.

1938 - Club stalwart Albert Worrall hangs up his boots after a mammoth 503 first team games.

1940 - Leigh succumb to a club record 60-8 defeat at Salford.

1941 - Leigh cease operations for the duration of the war.

1946 - Like a pheonix, Leigh emerge from the rugby league shadows and play a season at Charles Street.

1947 - Leigh move to their new Kirkhall Lane headquarters, and tour Cornwall in a 3 game exhibition with Barrow.

1948 - International fullback Jimmy Ledgard joins Leigh from Dewsbury in a record £2,650 transfer.

1949 - Leigh lose a fourth Lancashire Cup Final to Wigan. French champions Roanne visited town and Leigh ground out a 2-0 victory.

1950 - Leigh break the transfer record once more with the £5,000 signing of Wigan hooker Joe Egan. The club undertook a short tour of France with games against Catalan and Perpignan.

1952 - Leigh win the Lancashire Cup for the first time with a resounding 22-5 victory over St Helens at Swinton.

1953 - Floodlights installed at Kirkhall Lane at a cost of £4,100. A record crowd of 31,326 pack Hilton Park for a challenge cup tie with St Helens. Leigh pull off coup with the signing of world class sprinter McDonald Bailey, but he only plays one game of rugby, scoring a try in a specially arranged game with Wigan.

1955 - Leigh took part in the ITA TV trophy under floodlights in London, only to lose in the final. Widnes are defeated 26-9 as Leigh lift the Lancashire Cup a second time.

1959 - Ground renamed "Hilton Park" after former chairman James Hilton.

1966 - International Star Alex Murphy joins Leigh as coach.

1968 - Leigh make it to the BBC 2 Floodlit Trophy Final but lose to Castleford.

1969 - Floodlit Trophy is added to the trophy cabinet after a struggle with Wigan before 12,000 spectators.

1970 - St Helens defeated 7-4 in Lancashier Cup Final.

1972 - Floodlit Trophy once more lifted by Leigh, by virtue of a 5-0 victory over Wigan.

1976 - Leigh set new record score with 75-3 drubbing of Doncaster.

1978 - Second Division Championship success secured. John Woods plays and scores in every game.

1982 - The Championship comes to Hilton Park following a nerve wracking 13-4 victory at Whitehaven before an estimated 4,500 Leigh fans. Leigh trail 4-1 at halftime only for Alex Murphy's half-time team talk to lift his charges in the second half.

1985 - Leigh relegated from First Division.

1986 - Leigh romp to Second Division title. During the season, twice breaking the scoring record for most points in a game against Mansfield Marksmen (76-6) and Keighley (92-2). 1992 - John Woods retires having broken the club’s career points record. Steve Simms is appointed as the club’s first overseas coach. St Helens inflict a new club record defeat with a whopping 64-9 win over Leigh at Knowsley Road. Leigh regain their form however with great wins at Wakefield, Hull, and Sheffield; and finish the season with excellent results at home.

1994 - memorable victories over title chasing St Helens and Bradford punctuate a difficult season and Leigh are relegated from the top division.

1995 - Leigh suffer club record 94-4 defeat at Workington Town in Challenge Cup.

1997 - Leigh finish 2nd in the Second Division and are promoted.

1998 - Leigh finish bottom of the table with a succession of heavy defeats. Unknown Australian Ian Millward arrived to take the coaching reigns in October.

1999 - Leigh finish 4th in the Northern Ford Premiership

2000 - Ian Millward leaves for St Helens, fellow Australian Paul Terzis is appointed. Leigh make it through to the Grand Final before losing 13-12 to Dewsbury.

2001 - Leigh romp to Minor Premiership glory, winning 26 from 28 league games and also lift the Trans-Pennine Cup with a 36-0 drubbing of Keighley. Promotion evades Leigh however who crash to a heartbreaking 26-18 play-off defeat to Widnes. Neil Turley breaks the club record for tries in a season and also the world record for number of tries scored by a fullback. He equals the tries in a game record with 6 of the best in a 70-0 drubbing of Workington. He eventually finishes the season with 55 tries for Leigh and representative honours for Lancashire and Great Britain Under-21s.

2002 - Leigh battle gamely in the Northern Ford Premiership, finishing runners-up to rampant full-time Huddersfield. The Centurions go on to make the Grand Final and are competitive for 50 minutes before Huddersfield stretch away to take the game 38-16. Neil Turley finishes the season with 404 points - a new club record.

Adam Bristow surpasses Mick Bolewskis record of 100 games for an Australian player.

2003 - Brand new season sees Leigh again tussle with full time opposition in the form of Salford. Neil Turley returns from a serious back injury to score a club record equalling 38 points in a game (5 tries, 9 goals). The club reaches the final of the Arriva Trains Cup only to lose 36-19 to Salford.

SHARRATTS SIGN UP FOR SUPER LEAGUE

Leigh Centurions today have signed a five figure sponsorship deal with Europe’s largest Wrought Iron manufacturer – ‘House of Sharratt.

Now better known for their extensive range of both modern and traditional furniture and giftware, the company, which is based at Alma House, St Helens Road, Leigh have signed a record twelve month deal with an option for 2006.

Executive Director Derek Beaumont commented, “This is a significant day in the history of Leigh Centurions. We have signed a record deal with a local company who have a reputation for success in the UK and Europe. We are delighted to have ‘House of Sharratt’ as our principle sponsor for our inaugural Super League season and look forward to developing our partnership to the benefit of both parties.’

Managing Director Keith Sharratt commented, ‘We are delighted to back the Centurions for Super League X. The club has made immense strides over the last two years and we feel that the time is right to join the success story at Leigh. I think both parties will benefit from working with each other and our professionalism and desire for success will no doubt be a winner with the club. Being a local club and a local lad this is one of the proudest deals I have had the pleasure in signing. I think people will sit up and take notice of the Centurions in Super League. I have spoken to the Directors and some players and the atmosphere at the club is one of determination to succeed and prove that Leigh can be a force to contend with in the rugby world, and I want my company to be part of that desire and will to succeed.’

The sponsorship deal will see the company name positioned on the front of the Centurions pro and replica kit for the Super League X campaign.

FIVE STAR CENTURIONS

Leigh Centurions today announced the first batch of signings for Super League X, with five players penning new contracts.

Two of the signing are current Centurions, Paul Rowley and Danny Halliwell. Both players have played a big part in the Centurions successful triple trophy season and have penned new Super League deals with the club.

New faces appearing at Hilton Park, include the experienced Steve McCurrie from Widnes, Rob Jackson from London Broncos and James King from Barrow.

Steve McCurrie has penned a 12month contract with the Centurions following his surprise release from Widnes. Steve has also played for Warrington and his experience and size will be a great asset to the team.

Rob Jackson who was playing for the London Broncos last season has also signed a deal with the Centurions for the 2005 campaign. Rob plays at Centre and will provide an extra dimension in the Centurions attack.

James King has signed from Barrow. James is a player that the Club has followed over the last 12 months. The Centurions did enquire about James earlier in the season, however they decided to wait until his contract came to an end at Barrow before moving in for the player who had also courted interested from a number of other Super League clubs.

A pleased Head Coach, Darren Abram commented, “I am very happy to have re-signed Danny and Paul for Super League X, they are both quality players. We have signed two experienced Super League players in Steve and Rob, and James King is a very promising player that I feel will flourish playing in Super League. These signings are the first with more to come in the following days.”

PNG STAR SIGNS FOR LEIGH

Leigh Centurions today announced the capture of Papua New Guinea star John Wilshere following his release from Warrington Wolves. John has signed on a 12month deal.

John (25yrs) can play either full back, centre or wing and has played 8 test matches for PNG. John has previous NRL experience with St George Illawarra, Penrith, Melbourne and Perth Reds. John is also an experienced goal kicker who will provide cover for Neil Turley.

Head Coach Darren Abram exclusively told leighrl.co.uk "John is a big strong running player who has gaining experienced in Super League and the NRL. He had an unfortunate time at Warrington but has the opportunity with Leigh Centurions to show why he is an international player. John will bring size, speed and agility to the backs, plus he is a natural try scoring player as well".

John Wilshere added, "I am very pleased to sign for Leigh Centurions. I have not been able to fully show my ability due to injury, however, I am now fully fit and cannot wait to pull a shirt on and get playing for Leigh and put last seasons frustrations behind me".

Hi Guys (and Gals)
Nice to see some interest being shown about my club Leigh Centurions, yup we have been out of the 'big time' for quite a while now but are back and are intent on enjoying it even if it is only a short visit :) .
We may be only a mid size town in Northern England but we will look after our guests from Oz that you guys have lent to us and I think its fair to say that most of the Aussies that have ever played for us (including Gorden Tallis's dad Wally back in the 60's) always leave with fond memories of this town and its inhabitants - who can seem rather strange until you get to know us then once a friend always a friend.
Looking above at our history did you know we were the first 'pommy' team to beat a touring new Zealand and a touring Australia team - way back when I must admit :D even before my time.
keep in touch.

Do the poor buggers stand a chance of avoiding relegation, taking into account that it will be 2 down this coming season to make way for Perpingan.

I some how think that Leigh are goneskis and the return of Castleford is iminent.

Like I've said previously yes we are favourites for relegation but we will enjoy ourselves whilst we are here and as some one once said 'its a funny old game' as for Castleford, have they bought well? they seem to be relying a lot on their last years academy signings and make no bones about it NL1 aint no pushover league and well the likes of Whitehaven, Hull KR Oldham and Rochdale wont roll over and die this coming 'term'.
But we will see what happens as the season unfolds.

I'd like nothing better than to see Leigh stop up this time but it's going to be difficult; the system has been against them from the start, with not being able to recruit until after all the other clubs had more or less sorted things out. Surely the system has to be changed.

In non-league soccer applications for consideration for promotion have to be in sometime in October and the final decisions are made by 31 December. It's time the RFL were as well organised.

I don't think relegation is a foregone conclusion. Widnes look as though they might be even worse than last year and London minus Moran might well struggle. Win those games and being hammered by the top 4 or 5 sides won't matter so much.

How can you make the system any more efficent? Leigh were guarenteed to go up by the RFL prior to the Grand Final, and lets face it you can't have teams recuriting till after they win the trophy.

Once they won it, it was all ironed out by the RFL the Tuesday after the final, so they were held up for a grand total of 3 days. Not much.

But that argument is not valid as the majority of players had fixed themselves up with contracts well before the NL1 GF date, and to be honest would/could a player talk to a club where they were not guaranteed a 'job'? but we knew the rules and as usual stand by them flawed as they may be.
