Leilua wants to improve his defence

Other players that are much less flashy like Host and Lawrie are going ok in defence with the same coach. Not defending Mary but we will see what happens with Luciano I guess. The other Leilua on the other hand is going to set up plenty of tries for Nofoaluma if he ends up inside him. Nofo could be a sneaky SuperCoach gun this season.

I reckon Nofo is worth a sneaky 50 to finish as top tryscorer, sportsbet has him at $67. Juicy and tempting odds.

What I was alluding to when I started the thread is that Leilua feels he wasn’t benefiting from the coaching he was receiving.

whether he was referring to technique, positional advice or simply the need to be trained harder, I don’t know.

what I do know is that one of our few real offensive weapons walked.

Hopefully Merrin’s offload will fill the void.

Too many high profile juniors that the club has invested time and money on have left the club without reaching their potential.

It’s a fact that many won’t but I will be royally pissed off if Leilua kills it this year as a Tiger.

I see what your saying.
But..... lets look at it this way.
Leilua has been with us for many years. Most of our forwards punch out big minutes, they train for that, they pride themselves on playing the big minutes.
Prior to last season we took pride in our defence.
Leilua, when given the chance, gassed quick, and didnt do well in defence.
Seeing how the other forwards progressed, i wouldnt be blaming Leiluas issues on coaching, that would be more of a attitude issue.
Based on that, i wouldnt want the club to be offering him $350k a year.
I like the kid, but he didnt seem to be keen with us.
Maybe the extra dollars will be the motivation he needs to push himself.

Luc left to improve his defence.

"As a team and as a club we want to build that new culture as a defensive team because we've got a lot of attacking players, but it's a good thing that we're all focusing on defence.

"That's one of the reasons I wanted to come here, because I knew Madge focuses on defence a lot.

Now Mary on the other hand focus's on ................
................Mary.

He will go well at tigers and is looking fit
I watched the tigers trial, just to suss out Leilua.
He still gasses early, and still has lazy arm swings in defence.
His attack is awesome, very dangerous, but his fitness and defence will take alot of time imo.

Let’s not forget Packer, signed with them and went downhill while he was still with us and now after one season Tigers want to dump him

The bloke is one of the worst defenders in the comp, so he's right to try and improve that area of his game.

Getting fit will also help.

He has obviously spent bugger all time watching Wests Tigers games before signing up as joining our club to become a better defensive player would have been like asking Stephen Hawking to help you become a speed rapper.

There are a couple of ways of responding to what only can be described as one of the most gobsmacking statements of 2020 -to date. My take on this is that even Luc, not known for his work ethic or dynamic defence himself, was moved to despair by Mary's porous defensive structures which leaked the second highest number of points in 2019, and realised there was no future at SGI under him.

However, he may regret the move as the first half of the Charity Shield had Flanno's defensive fingerprints all over it- it's our attack that may well prove to be the problem and Luc could have really helped out with that.

The test will be Luc up against Frizell. Let's see if Luc can contain Frizell and if the boys can put in extra in defence when Luc gets the ball.

The other big test maybe containing his brother.

. Interestingly Lafai and Joey we’re centre parings for Samoa. when Samoa played Fiji last year Lafai and Joey opposed Williame and Milne, thought both centre pairings attacked well but weren’t so good defensively, overall though I remember thinking the Fijian pair outplayed their more fancied rivals.
