A DEBILITATING leg injury isn't about to end the career of Bathurst NRL star George Rose.

The Sea Eagles first grade front rower suffered a horrific break to his lower right leg two weeks ago in the Saturday fixture against Melbourne Storm.

With 19 games in the top grade under his belt, Rose had become something of a cult figure on the northern peninsula since making the move from the Roosters.

It was an innocuous tackle which caused the injury, leaving bone protruding from his lower leg and requiring numerous operations to repair the damage.

Rose's number one fan, his mum Cherie, said yesterday it was a compound fracture.

"It was a pretty bad break," she said.

"I didn't see it happen, but when I watched the replay it made me feel sick.

"There was bone poking through the flesh. He had major surgery later that night from midnight to about 4.30am.

"Then he had another operation two days later to flush the wound clean to make sure there was no infection.

"He got out of hospital on the Wednesday and then last Friday had to go back in because of another slight infection where the bone came out of his leg."

Cherie Rose said he son has one plate and six screws in the main break with two other screws to keep the tibia and fibula together.

"He's got two gaping holes in his leg the size of 20 cent pieces," she said.

"It was just shattering for him. He was playing such good footy.

"But George takes things at his own pace and is determined to get back on the paddock next season.

"He survived that recent car accident and now this. It's another one of life's hurdles, but we're sure George will handle it. He's not going to let this end his career."

Mrs Rose said the Manly club had set up a special section on its website (www.manlyseaeagles.com.au) to send get well messages to the injured prop.
