Woods takes up Tigers post Nov 15 2004
Relegated Castleford have appointed little-known Australian David Woods as their new coach, initially on a one-year deal.
The 39-year-old, who has coached junior teams at the Penrith Panthers for the last four years, succeeds New Zealander Gary Mercer, who was not retained after the Tigers finished bottom of Tetley's Super League and has since joined Oldham.
Castleford will be hoping Woods can emulate his fellow countryman Stuart Raper, who transformed the club from relegation candidates to play-off regulars after being plucked from the backroom staff of Cronulla in 1997.
"David may not have coached at the top grade but he has a wealth of coaching experience and has an excellent track record in developing players," said Tigers chief executive Richard Wright.
"We have held two face-to-face interviews with him and his enthusiasm for the task in hand is very apparent. His plans for the club's future are very exciting.
"David flew back to Australia after our meeting with him last week but, having being offered and accepting the post, he made arrangements to return at the earliest possible opportunity and we expect him to take charge later this week."
Woods said: "I'm rapped about getting the job at Castleford and really looking forward to getting over there and working with the boys.
"I kept a close watch on the situation at Castleford last season and was aware that there were some problems. But now getting the club back into Super League is what it's all about and I'm sure that we can look forward to a good season."
