Live by the sword

In life, we live and die by the sword.

Potter has a two year contract year one, with an inherited squad. He's not stupid.

He's cleaning it all out big style.

No ones on the open market this year, so it seems we aren't spending big for average players, which has been our style previously.

What I reckon is going on is this:

Hes clearing the squad of people who either don't fit his structure, or don't want to be there (management 101)

Next year will see us blood a serious number of youngsters, largely because we will have the cap space to do it.

Then, he gets a contract extension, with a war chest and a heap of cheap young players with 30+ first grade games under their belts.

I wouldn't be surprised if we are front loading to next year some of the youngsters contracts so they technically play for free year after.

The short-term reality is we are going to suck this year and next, but he is actually building a long term sustainable dynasty. Remember when we were going to be the NRL's Manchester United? I actually think Potter is going to do it.

And, ultimately, with the mess our club is in, we should be doing worse than we are, and none of the players rumored to be going are helping us.

Be patient.

He has to make finals next year to have any hope of an extention.
It seems the club has given him free reign which is a good sign, they must be thinking long term for Potter even now.

Ill be disappointed if potter doesn't get an opportunity in 2015. He is doing a lot of good work at the moment and deserves his chance with his squad. I thought the Sheens hangover was going to last a long long time, at this rate it'll be Sheens who by 2015.

No.

Provided they improve next year from fifteenth ( where we are likely to finish this year), he will be retained for 2015.

He will need to produce the goods in 2015 though - I'm thinking Top 6 minimum.

Probably right.
They wouldn't let him clear the decks just to punt him at the end of his contract.

I doubt Potter could survive a bottom three finish in 2014 and really it very hard to see us climbing the ladder with the players we will have on the books. Even at full strength and injury free I see us off the pace. I may be wrong and I think Potter as a breath of fresh air after most of the Sheens years, but the NRL is a very fickle place

It would be massively unfair to sack Potter before the end of 2015 , not only unfair but friggin crazy. IF Potter isnt there 2015 1) who replaces him and 2) the next coach will only wont to come in and release players to build his own squad and then we are back to square one again. I think all fans that support Potter should use places such as this to let the board know we happy with the current progress of the team and coach , or else they will feel pressured to get rid of him.

Also a couple of forwards and I think this current squad is easily in the top 8 , so hopefully that will help.

Any one else rate Andy Fiagatusa? I think he is a real talent and Payten has had some good things to say about him. Sue, Funaki, Lovett and Vela are other good prospects. I'd rather go with these young forwards than risk another high price failure. It seems to be the way Potter thinks, which is pleasing.

Yep, love the way Fiagatusa runs the ball back, he is also seems to play with alot of courage, he's a player I hope really kicks on.

I'd definitely give Potter until the end of 2015.

He arrived to a shambles and has been given a license to clear the place out and start from scratch. It would be unfair to judge him too harshly and give him the boot until the end of 2015 barring utter incompetence.
From what we've seen so far he's doing pretty well and deserves the chance to have these 3 years in order to show what he is capable of with a squad he has built up rather than the mess he was handed in year one.

Runs hard and straight and hits hard, I have been really impressed. I dont know if he has the class of Santi, but their would not be much in it

We'd just be making it so much harder for ourselves punting a coach after his first two years after inheriting a squad thatd been dysfunctional for years

You wouldnt attract anyone half decent, we were lucky imo to get Potter - hes basically coaching for peanuts
