Is there any skill to long kicking now?
They all seem to kick so they have hang time and get caught on the full.
Does anyone kick 40/20s?
Who is the best long kicker?
Was there a time when kicking down the fullbacks throat was considered a poor kick?

Keep an eye on Michael Morgan's kicking game at halfback, he's one of the best at long kicks. Pulled off a ripper 40/20 in round 1.

No, it’s been done for so long it’s now ingrained in the human DNA. Expect to see more prop forwards doing it.

Better fullbacks now, not worse kickers

Kalyn Ponga. There’s nothing he can’t do.

Who is the best long kicker?
Probably Nathan Long

Back in 1963 a halfback called Bruce Mitchell put up a spiral bomb. The fullback for the opposition, Albert “big mouth” McCullogh, went to take it but he accidentally swallowed it and tragically choked to death.

The kick itself wasn’t considered poor, but the outcome was tragic.

40/20 kicks are hard to get, and are meant to be rare. If you look at last season the most kicked by any player during the season was 2 and that number were jointly kicked by Cooper Cronk, Anthony Milford, Blake Green, Sam Williams and Daley Cherry-Evans. A further 10 players kicked one each.

The thing to remember is they are hard to kick as you have: defences rushing kickers; wingers dropping back to cover with fullbacks; weather; the shape of the ball; and the players kicking ability all impacting on whether it is successful or not.

Yeah but you get basically nothing for them as well. A bit of field position that you get 10 other times by way of penalties through the game.

High ball contests are dead. No high kick is ever high enough to be contested anymore. The 7th tackle rule also deters teams kicking on the last inside the redzone.

Kicking has become a frustrating and extremely boring part of rugby league.

Bring back the kicking duels between the two fullbacks, that used to great to watch years ago, I remember some great ones between Greg Brentnall and Marty Gurr and quite a few others.

Yeah, I think the way a typical set of possession is basically risk free hit ups was the end of the kicking duel.
