@panthersnrlclub has called press conference for 1pm tomorrow at Centrebet Stadium Penrith .. Coach Ivan Cleary to make an announcement ..

Wonder what it could be? A major signing? details of our sponsor? Or just the naming of Lewis as captain maybe?

A big congratulations to Luke Lewis who will be announced as Penrith Panthers captain today. The only choice, a great choice and a guy who will go down not only as one of the greatest Penrith Panthers of all time, but I feel he will go down as one of your best captains. I am that confident of this guys leadership ability that I would have went as far as having him captain even when Petero Civoniceva was signed. That is no disrespect to the big man, I just felt it would have been a bold statement. That is is in the past and you could argue that this is now the perfect time for Lewis to lead.

Great move, great things happening out Penrith way with Gus Gould in charge. Panthers fans should be excited.

When i first saw Luke Lewis he struck me a soft winger who didn't want to mess his hair up..

Time makes fools of us all..

Congrats to Luke on his appointment,& the Panthers on making a very intelligent choice..

Now just don't beat Easts & i'm stoked..:p

Good stuff, Luke will be a great captain for us! Will lead by example as well as being a bit more vocal then big Petero was.

I don't think it was that Petero wasn't vocal, he got binned a few times for going too hard at it after the refs wouldn't listen - which I think was part of the problem.... the refs.

There were more than a handful of times that after the game both coach and captain would comment on the refs inability to listen to the captain by being dismissive. Lewis got sent on his way back to the line after pleading his case when he stepped in as captain too. Refs just weren't interested in the Panthers as much as they were other teams.

I meant more vocal with the team, there were times when you would see the team huddled after conceding points and Petero wouldnt be saying much, Not a knock on petero, the big guy was a good captain.

NSW and Australian representative Luke Lewis has been announced as Penrith's new captain ahead of the 2012 NRL season.
The local junior, who is entering his 12th season at the club, was the natural selection as new coach Ivan Cleary's replacement for former skipper Petero Civoniceva, who joined Brisbane in the off-season.
Cleary said the decision was an easy one, with Lewis's leadership qualities on display throughout his career as he developed from a rangy winger to a premiership winner and now a classy lock forward.
"Sometimes with a great leader, it is pretty obvious and it's been perfectly obvious the last couple of weeks since Luke's been back at training," Cleary told reporters on Tuesday.
"It's always great to have a great leader and I think we've got one ready to fill the boots of some of the great captains we've had here in the past.
"As a player, he's outstanding - not only on the field but he's also very well respected off the field."
Lewis said while the captaincy was not something he had always aspired to, despite playing for the club for his entire career, it was a welcome honour.
"To tell you the truth, it's not something I really thought about," he said.
"It's obviously a massive honour for myself.
"I always wanted to play for the Penrith club as a junior.
"My childhood hero, Brad Fittler, captained the club.
"They're massive shoes to fill, but it's something that I'm definitely looking forward to.
"Hopefully I can do this job to the best of my ability and lead this club to some success.
"I really believe we really have a big year ahead of us."

Great stuff. He never has a bad game & gives 100%. Off the field he doesn't drink so keeps clean & can joke around when it's needed but is a hard worker & you can't ask for more in a captain
