TwoRugby Leaguefans and a gaggle of media gathered outside the gates of Hollywood bad boy Russell Crowe's Australian farm today, hoping for a glimpse of his wedding to long-time singer girlfriend Danielle Spencer.
"Mr and Mrs Crowe Congratulations.Legend and Willow From League Unlimited," read a sign erected by the pair of fans at Crowe's gate in the hamlet of Nana Glen. They waited in deckchairs in hope of a last-minute invitation.
"We are just going to sit here and maybe they will see our sign and maybe we will get an invitation, but I only have slippers because I have lost my shoes," saidLegend from theAustralian town of Sydney. Guards patrolled the Oscar-winning actor's property in the hills behind Coffs Harbor in northern New South Wales, around 250 miles north of Sydney.
Around 20 photographers and cameramen, with cattle trucks and satellite dishes, were camped on the side of a narrow two-lane country road that winds past the entrance to Crowe's property.
Spencer has spent the night off the farm so that she can make a traditional entrance on her father's arm and the paparazzi were eagerly awaiting her arrival to marry Crowe on his 39th birthday.
But logging trucks constantly roared past the gate to the 800-acre property, whipping up a pall of dust and clouding their prying lenses.
Agitated Goat
The intense media spotlight on this normally tranquil valley led Crowe's neighbor, a League website host, to move his pet billy goat from across the road. The goat was getting agitated by the sudden arrival of the paparazzi as the wedding hour drew near.
Mr O'niel, who owns "big willie" the nanny goat said to a reporter "We dont get this sort of carryon when my boys from my junior league team come for a sleepover"
"I just wish thatRabbitoh loving bitch, wussell, would get his nuptials over and consumate the damnedthing so I can get back to normal and start banning people and threaten to commit suicide"
O'neil continued "I dont know what effect this is having on my lovely goat,,she gets very dry when she,s upset and I get horribly chafed !"
Crowe's wedding bash is already days old. There was a Friday night party and light show and a Saturday cricket match and the celebrations will stretch into Monday night with chamber music and Crowe's own band, Thirty Odd Foot of Grunt.
The Oscar-winning star of the 2001 film Gladiator said he first thought of marrying Spencer, a 32-year-old singer, actor and dancer, when they met on the set of the film The Crossing in 1990.
Crowe has said the wedding will be a traditional affair, without a Hollywood A-list, but some big names will be among the 80-odd guests, including Gladiator director Ridley Scott. Crowe said he hoped his good mate ozbash would be able to make it over so he could be his best man.
Giorgio Armani will be on hand to watch the whole wedding party wear his creations as they make their way to the altar inside a specially built domed chapel, dubbed "Sacre Crowe" and "Saint Russell's Basilica" by the local media.
The sun is shining and there's not a cloud in the sky, although rain-clouds gathering off the coast of northern New South Wales are threatening to sprinkle light drizzle on the celebration which is set to begin late in the afternoon.
However, an elaborate series of covered walkways leading from the chapel to the reception tent will shield guests from any rain and from the ever-watchful media photographers in helicopters.
And if any helicopters get too close, New Zealand-born Crowe has one on standby to buzz any intruders.
