After the gunners beat the galcticos. Can they progress to the next round? I wouldn't back against the men from the santiago bernabeu.

Anyways, how do you think the big one will go tomorrow? I'm talking about Chelsea v Barcelona, of course. My money is on Chelsea to get the win. Was thinking of putting money on a score result but who knows how it will go? The pitch might slow the scoring down, but then again it might not.

Was a big win weasel.

Tactics were spot on. It hasn't worked in the premiership cause they get closed down more and don't have the space. But this morning the system of 5 in midfield with Reyes and Ljungberg pushing forward to support Henry exposed Madrid so many times. Could have been a bigger margin too...

Fabregas was brilliant. Only 18, he has such a big future. Reyes had a blinder too. The young defence really stood up. It was an all round great performance and one that will go down as one of Arsenals best European wins.

Been grinning all day
Will be a similar game at Highbury. Real will give you chances and at Highbury I expect Arsenal to score 1 or 2 goals. I think we'll get through...

Re Chel/Barca, I'm backing the option - both teams to score. It's paying $2.10.

Go the Gunners!! :D :D

I missed the game this morning though :(

I've heard stories from both sides..

The one Macca_ wrote, the Gunners fan POV

And the opposition POV. Real were all over Arsenal and Henry's strike was lucky..

Beckham unlucky to not equalise..

Real all over Arsenal?

Watched a different game.

Madrid had around 60% of possession but the majority of it was in their half or just inside Arsenals. They had 20 or so shots. The majority of the shots were 30 yard speculators or from wide angles. Like Real do, they shoot on site.

A few people I know only saw the first half and were surprised it was only 1-0 to Arsenal. They created a number of chances and gave Real plenty to think about. Most people who watched the game would say the margin could have been more had they taken them. Henrys header just wide, Freddy and Diaby going close to taking it round the keeper, Reyes in the opening minute, Pires in the final minutes, Henry spraying wide from and angle he should have done better etc etc.

Lehmann was only troubled 3 times. 2 from Beckham and then the scramble in the box in the dying minutes. Other than that they were routine saves.

The second half saw Real having a lot more ball as Arsenal looked to hold onto the 1-0 and were less adventurous going forward. The Gunners got the tactics spot on.

Commentators and match reports agree that Arsenal were well worth the win and deserved what they got. If they were dominated, it'd be a case of unlucky Real. I'm yet to find anyone who watched the game who thinks Real were unlucky not to win.

Not sure how Beckham was unlucky not to score. He had 2 chances saved by Lehmann. But like he does, he takes to much time when a chance presents itself.

As for Henry scoring a lucky goal  This is laughable. Anyone thinking that can go sod of basically. It was all class!

Arsenal 1 Real Madrid 0. In Madrid!

Beckham admitted Arsenal were worthy winners, but felt his side failed to match the improved standards they have set in recent weeks.

A depleted Arsenal stunned the nine-times European champions by ending an unbeaten home record in the competition that stretched back to October 2002 thanks to a virtuoso goal from the French striker.

Real Madrid coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro admitted that he had been disappointed by his side's timid performance in attack, but also paid tribute to the Arsenal display.

'We suffered an important setback out there, but they played a great game and we will have to do the same in the second leg if we want to get through,' he said.

'They made a great start and made the most of their strengths which are winning the ball and breaking quickly from midfield.

'They were exceptionally strong in the first 10 minutes, they broke well and later in the game they were very well organised in defence.'

Real barely managed to trouble Arsenal keeper Jens Lehmann and leading striker Ronaldo, who on the eve of the game hinted he may leave the club at the end of the season, had an uncharacteristically quiet game.

Remembering to the age of Arsenal defence without Cole, Lauren and Campbell (3 of the first 4 choice starters). Toure being the other and he was the oldest at 24. And a right midfield player (Flamini) playing at left back! Surely if Real dominated they would have carved that defence up.

To be fair to Chelsea, De Horno should not have been sent off. Tough for them now going to Spain.

And just on the above re the Henry 'lucky' goal...

2 comments in the article about the game in todays Daily Telegraph -

Thierry Henry's sensational solo goal
Henry's strike - his 201st for the club - was one of the finest in Europe this season

oh its 2-1 BARCA !! CMON...... BYE BYE CHELSKI

So, the big question is... ARE CHELSKI GONESKI??

Lugging a one goal deficit all the way to the Nou Camp isn't gonna be easy, especially with Barca having two priceless away goals in the bag.

C'mon Barca... finish 'em off!

Well as i said Macca_ the POV i got from a non-Arsenal supporter.

So i went to soccernet.com and read the match report and seems my friend was full of it :D

We totally dominated with such an inexperienced back four of Toure, Senderos, Flamini and Eboue.

Not to mention player a 5 man midfield.. surprised Diaby was started so late and Walcott was kept on the bench.

If theres a Video anywhere of Henry's goal, it'd be much appreciated :)

Debatable.

One could argue that he should have received a yellow for his earlier foul on Messi, and a yellow for the one he was sent off for. On the merits of the incident itself, perhaps not a red... but these things tend to even out in the end. After all, Essien was extremely lucky not to be sent off a few months ago.

Just on Moaninho... here's a great story from football365:

Jose wants Sky repeat

Wednesday February 22 2006

Jose Mourinho has launched a bizarre rant on and against Sky Sports following Chelski’s controversial 2-1 defeat to Barcelona which left their Champions League dream in tatters.Incensed by Assier Del Horno’s ridiculously harsh dismissal in the first half for a messy, rather than malicious, tackle on the aptly-named Messi, the Chelski boss suggested that the television station should lead a campaign for the tie to be replayed.

Interrupting interviewer Geoff Shreeves even before he had been asked a question, Mourinho demanded: “Are you going to show that [Del Horno's sending off] 200 times each day and try to persuade UEFA to repeat the game? Because the game should be eleven against eleven and try to persuade UEFA that [there should be] no suspension for Del Horno?”

Apparently still fuming that the station repeatedly aired Michael Essien's horror tackle on Liverpool's Dietmar Hamann in the group stages, and that Essien was later punished by UEFA, Mourinho continued to ask: “Can you do this for us? In the same way that you did with Essien against Liverpool?”

“I hope you can be fair. I hope you can be at the level of prestige that a big channel like Sky is and you can do this for us.”

With his side reduced to ten men with barely 40 minutes of the tie played, Mourinho refused to discuss the rest of the match.

“I do not think we can speak about the game because the game is not a game. I don’t have the English words for that...it was a pure game until the sending off. After that it was not a pure game.”

In the build-up to the tie, Mourinho had reportedly warned his players of Barca’s propensity for ‘dirty tricks’ and accused youngster Messi of duping the referee in a bid to have Del Horno dismissed.

“Of course it is not a red card. The kid is not just a very good football player - the way he jumps, he provokes the contact with Del Horno and because of that the referee gave a red card. The boy, when he sees him come, jumps on him, and after that is rolling, rolling, rolling, rolling.”

Fair enough mate. That incident was the first bit of the match I seen . Turned the tv on and the guy was on the ground... Then I saw the replay and said, that's not a red card...

Well we didn't actually dominate them, but were arguebly the better side on the night. You couldn't say Arsenal didn't deserve to win anyway.

I thought Diaby may have started. But on reflection Hleb, Reyes, Fabregas and Ljungberg were all trying to get forward with Gilberto holding. Diaby maybe hasn't been in long enough for this kind of match. You could even see when he came on that he still wasn't reading it with some of the others.

And Walcott was never going to come on. Taking him there was just part of his learning. Sending a 16 year old out at Real Madrid off the bench would never have been in the plan...

I only saw the second half of Arsenal v Real and Arsenal were the better side. It was amazing how routinely they were cutting Real up with counter attacks.

btw I really wish Henry wasn't so damn sh*t in big games in Europe:lol:

karma is a bitch - but good to see that poor little Robben is out of hospital after that traumatic attack by Pepe Reina

but still only half-time in all the games. anything can, and probably will, happen

does anybody else think that after THAT goal by Henry against Real, the interest from Barca may go up a notch ?

You'd think so TD.

But on the other side of the coin it shows Henry what this young team has to offer in coming seasons. Like us or hate us, there is no doubt about how good the talent that is coming through is.

He got a glimpse of it vs Real. Toure, Senderos, Eboue, Fabregas and Reyes all had great games. Throw in the likes of Diaby, Walcott and Van Persie plus a host of others all of whom are 24 or under...

Plus going into a new stadium. The carrot Arsenal has dangled is equal to what Chelsea would pay (wages) so it won't be about money for him. He has the chance to lead this club into a new stadium and a new era with the kids coming through...

One things for certain, Arsenal won't sell him for any ammount unless he says he wants to go. And the win over Real could be a persuader for him if he has any doubts.
