Makybe Diva given unfair advantage

The trainer of the New Zealand horse that ran third in the Melbourne Cup has hit out at the decision to water the track ahead of yesterday's race.

Xcellent picked up A$375,000 following a strong finish.

Club officials at Flemington watered the track in an attempt to soften it up before the race - a move that favoured the eventual winner, Makybe Diva.

That has annoyed Xcellent trainer Michael Moroney, who wonders if Xcellent turns out to be favourite in next year's Melbourne Cup, whether the officials will firm the track up so as to favour him.

Michael Moroney told Newstalk ZB's Paul Holmes it was disgraceful that they served up a track like that, and many jockeys and trainers are very disappointed about it.

i explained in the other thread that had the track not been watered, it would have been a concrete track. a track which would hurt horses

so with a 31 degree day predicted they watered it to allow it to be dead in the morning but then improve to good before the cup. the track didn't dry out as much as normal

so in hindsight too much water. but on the flipside, if they didn't water the track at all, we'd have more than 2 horses retiring from racing today

oh and excellent still wouldn't have won

But the champ could have carried 60kgs.

Xcellent showed his talent in the Cox plate - 54 lengths behind.

If Xellent was carrying 58kg he would have wanted a wet track too. It is dangerous for Mares to carry that sort of weight on a hard track.

Your Horse could not beat the diva and it was carrying significantly less weight.

There were horses who found the going good enough to run from 2nd last into fourth and the way both On A Jeune and Xcellent finished the track didn't seem to worry either of them too much at all....

well the track was declared good after the cup.

and the time was only around 3 seconds slower than the record. don't think the track was too water affected then

The Diva would never have won if the track was dryer!! Xellent would have smashed it if it was dry just like it did in the Cox Plate with a WFA handicap

no horse in the last 10 years has ever carried 60 kg...if I remember correctly, its just way too much to carry over the distance...the DIVA was struggling last 50 with that weight..had the race been 50 metres more she would have got done.

ok, so was the track watered on the first tuesday in november, in victoria,mid spring,pissing down with rain a few days earlier just in case it turned to concrete and hurt the poor horseys feet ????

i thought it was watered to stop Xcellent prefering a hard and fast track where she would have undoubtedly blitzed the wannabe diva.

your tennis players lost
your golfers are no good

so there is no way aussie wanted to lose the biggest aussie icon of them all, the melb cup.

We are not the only ones complaining. Everyone is aware of this and it is news on both sides of the Tasman. The connections of several horses, NZ and Australian, have had a crack, as have the bookies who quite rightly predicted that MD would struggle in the proper conditions. It was a big news story over here tonight and it was most certainly not coming from a whinging Kiwi perspective, but rather reporting from Australia.

It's fairly safe to say that no one cares about union or netball on here.

NZ Have not won a cricket series against Australia since I can remember.

It is a condition of racing victoria that a track be presented that is somewhere between Dead and Good. That has been the case for many years. The condition of the track was "Good" just after the completion of the race. Makybe Diva was only 3 seconds of the record and she was carrying 58kg. There was nothing wrong with the track.

If it was a sawmp then your argument is valid. But as the speed of the race suggests there was nothing slow about the track.
