He is currently the favourite for the St Helens head coach job for next season to replace Mick Potter.

Papers say he as put his name forward and this year will be his last with the Maroons.

Also says Ricky Stewart, David Fairleigh and Jason Taylor could be in the running.

Gee Big Mal was a great head coach at the Raiders wasn't he. Without someone pulling the strings behind him (ala Henry for the Maroons) he'll get found out and have to open fruit shops in England.

I was going to say the exact same thing. He works with Origin because the players are motivated by him, he brings in the right coaches etc. but I wouldn't say the Maroons success was due to his tactical coaching

But then again I could be wrong.

agreed
he was hopeless at canberra as a HC
he's perfect for Origin, he leaves the tactical stuff for others and he focuses on man managing, which i imagine for Mal Meninga and Queenslanders, comes very naturally

He didnt do great at the Raiders , maybe it was too soon out from his playing days.
It would be interesting to see how he would go second time around.

SOO is different , these guys are elite players they dont need coaching, but agree Henry would be the tactical mastermind behind QLD

MAL MENINGA MAY BE BACK AT SAINTS
5th May 2010
By Martin Richards

ST HELENS are set to look to Australia again for their next coach when Mick Potter leaves at the end of the season – but they will not be turning to former boss Ian Millward.

Potter, who succeeded fellow Australian Daniel Anderson two years ago, was not looking to sign a new contract with the club and is searching for an opening in the NRL.

“It’s always been my intention to one day coach in the NRL and it’s something I truly believe I am ready for,” said Potter.

Queensland’s State of Origin coach Mal Meninga, the former St Helens centre, has already been linked with the job.

And David Fairleigh, the First Grade coach of the Central Coast Bears, who played for Saints in 2001, is another possible contender.

But some Saints fans want current skipper Keiron Cunningham or former favourite Paul Sculthorpe to put their names forward.

Millward, currently coach at Leigh, was sacked for gross misconduct by Saints in May 2005, despite winning two Super League titles, two Challenge Cups and a World Club crown.

But he is highly unlikely to be considered for a second spell at the club while Eamonn McManus remains as chairman.

“Mick has explained to us he has ambitions of possibly securing a place in the NRL and we wish him well,” said McManus.

Haven't seen what Farleigh's done but based on the others listed, I might have a crack at the job. Sure, I've no idea how to coach an NRL side, but that doesn't seem to be a major drawback in this instance.

He ran the Parramatta Toyota Cup side into the ground before leaving for North Sydney.

You would think Potter has already lined up a job in the NRL for next season, seems a strange decision to make an announcement midway through the current SL season if that was not the case...

Mal will employ the exact same structure for St. Helens that he has now, I dont see the big deal in that. And surely Henrys time at Canberra and the Cowboys suggests that maybe we give him a little too much credit for Queenslands success.

After all they do have Inglis, Smith, Lockyer, Price and Civ.

And of course Thurstan.

Mal is like half a Bennett.
Players will respect him and be inspired by him but he needs an assistant for the tactical side of the game.

Fairleigh - got Cook Islands to the Pacific Cup final as well - Tonga & Samoa had mostly NRL / SL experienced players
