Manly Sea Eagles: The run home...

Paul Johnson NRL.com Wed, 22 Jul 2009 15:16:00
Can the men from the Insular Peninsula go back-to-back in 2009? It’s a big ask, they haven’t been the force they were in 2008 and a large part of that has been the prolonged absence of Brett Stewart.

Whilst Michael Robertson is a safe option at the back, he is no Stewart. Few can match ‘The Prince of Brookvale’, but the man himself is due back for the big clash with Melbourne at Olympic Park in round 24.

Even without Stewart, Manly have been resurgent during the second half of 2009 winning seven of their last ten, indicating coach Des Hasler may have the Premiers primed for a title defence.

The run home: Knights (H), Wests Tigers (A), Rabbitohs (H), Roosters (A), Storm (A), Sharks (H), Titans (H)

Only three top eight teams feature in the Manly run to the finals and with two of those games at Brookie you can expect them to win a couple of those, but it is their Grand Final replay with the Storm south of the border which will have everyone talking.

Towelling Manly at Brookvale in round 8 will likely not be enough for the Storm who will want to punish their conquerors from 2008 even further, but this Manly side won’t take a backward step in what could be a cataclysmic forward battle. If Brent Kite and Josh Perry find their best in their run to the finals - look out!

Players to Watch:
Brent Kite
– Even Kite’s most ardent fans would tell you his performance in Origin this year was underwhelming, but the big man was amongst the Sea Eagles' best during their run to the trophy in 2008 and a repeat dose of the hard working attitude he showed back then will make him a force in the finals once again.

Anthony Watmough – Having already harped on the importance of the returning Brett Stewart, ‘Choc’ was a certainty for this spot. Watmough found controversy before the season even started after an altercation with a sponsor, continued in that vain as he was called a defensive turnstile and then stuck it to all his critics with one of the best performances of 2009 in Origin three. He tops the NRL in tackle busts with 82 and is 20th for line breaks. Watmough is a man to be feared.

Predicted finish: 6th

I agree. I dont even believe Manly will make the 8.

Loosing to Knights, Wests Tigers, Storm, Sharks, Titans will make it hard to make the 8..

I'm pretty happy that some douche who can't even spell "losing" correctly has written us off.

What your'e saying Terry has a ring of truth in it to some ears/eyes, but I don't think getting beaten by a better team on the day constitutes "choking"

How about you guys though, good win last night and a reasonable run home. You will make the finals for sure in my opinion. What happens from there is another matter, but at least you will get there. Considering the start to your season, it will be a magnificient effort, well done.

The final 5 in any order, Manly, Storm, Saints, Doggies, Titans. I know this is currently the leader board, but I don't think it will change too much.

When the whips start cracken, then I believe it will be the first 4 of those teams to do battle and should be great football regardless who you follow.

Last night's game was a good start. The 24 point win gave the F/A a nice bump.

All they need to do is play good, solid football. If they can do that, they should win most of their remaining games.

The encouraging thing is, they've won their way thru to the Grand Final both times in the past two seasons....so they know what to expect.

A quick look at the other Premiership contenders.....

Dragons......best season since 1985 (24 years??? that's a story in itself). It's all in the head for them now. As a club, they've been in similar positions plenty of times over the past 30 years, only fold under the pressure. I bet they wish the finals started this weekend, if only to get it over an done with....either way.

Bulldogs......building nicely and are looking relaxed....ominous. Usually teams take years to build into premiership contenders, then have a 2-3 year window to win it. They've come from last place to second in the space of 12 months and look to be cruising. Barring injury, they're a cert for a Preliminary final.

Titans......doing very well so far, however like the Dragons, probably wish the Finals started this weekend. As long as Prince stays healthy, they'll keep winning. Although like Soward for the Dragons, an injury to him between now and the Finals will more than likely put an end to their chances.

Storm......obviously not as dominant as previous seasons, but still very dangerous none the less. On their day are capable of beating anybody, although last weekend showed again that without Smith...are very vulnerable.

Knights, Cowboys, Panthers and Broncos all have major form and injury problems. Having said that, all of them have good credentials, especially the Broncos. However the kind of effort it will take to even qualify for the Finals, could mean the tank will be almost empty when they get there. Time will tell.
