THE Essendon Bombers, with legendary coach Kevin Sheedy in the pilot's seat, will compete in training drills against the Manly Sea Eagles next Thursday at the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen.
The Bombers travelling squad of 20 players will spend several hours in agility, tackle technique and other drills against the Eagles before joining Manly's NRL squad for lunch.
Sheedy and his players will know plenty about the Sea Eagles when they arrive by bus at 9.30am.
Once the training session was arranged the Bombers called for a history of the Manly club and details on all of the club's 2005 squad.
Manly coach Des Hasler said the session against Essendon would provide some variety in the club's pre-premiership training program.
``We are always looking for something different and the players are keen to pit their skills against another football code and also to discuss preparation and other issues about the AFL game.
``I'm sure we can take something positive out of the day and I am looking forward to watching the morning unfold,'' Hasler said.
Manly will open the session to the media to show off the club's new state of the art training headquarters at the Sydney Academy of Sport at Narrabeen.
THE Warringah Rats will be one of the fittest teams in the upcoming rugby premiership following the appointment of former Sea Eagle and St George- Illawarra second rower Tony Jensen to the head trainer's role.
Jensen is an unfortunate victim of the salary cap and players of far less ability will be wearing an NRL jersey in some clubs in the 2005 season.
Jensen played 13 NRL games for the Dragons last season but like Manly, the club has a glut of class backrowers.
Dragons coach Nathan Brown toyed with the idea of using Jenno as a hooker but once the club bought Michael Innes from Newcastle the writing was on the wall for Jensen.
A personal trainer by profession, Jensen will add a touch of professionalism to the Rats in their training and match preparation.
He will also bring plenty in the way of team spirit and a sense of fair play.
He will turn out to be one of the club's best off season buys.
MANLY'S first ever premiership winning captain Fred Jones will be a regular visitor to Brookvale Oval this season following his beloved Sea Eagles.
Now the proud owner of an animal riddled hobby farm at Nowra on the South Coast, Jones has two grandsons carrying on the family tradition at Manly.
Jye Jones Wiegold is a key member of the Matthew Shield side and Hayden Stevens is in the SG Ball squad.
Freddo will be at Brookie today to cheer on the boys in trials against North Sydney (3pm Matthews and 5pm SG Ball).
Before he heads off up the Princes Highway today he has a daily three hour animal feed of his dogs, birds, horses, chooks and pigs.
He swears he has a pig big enough to ride and will bring some photos to prove it . . . stand by.
THE Sea Eagles are in the midst of a baby boom.
John and Brenda Hopoate set the trend last week when Lehi Derek Hopoate was born on Australia Day - baby number eight in the house of Hoppa.
The big winger has knocked back several requests from television stations and women's magazines to go inside the family home at dinner time.
New Sea Eagles backrower Brent Kite and his wife Haley are celebrating the birth of a baby girl this week - two weeks ahead of schedule.
The couple are yet to name the newest addition to the family.
Hooker Chad Randall and his partner Jacquie will continue the trend with their baby due in six weeks.
A KEEN group of Manly supporters can't wait until March 20 to see the Sea Eagles in action in the 2005 premiership.
A group of 20 this week booked flights to Auckland to cheer on the side in the opening premiership game against
the New Zealand Warriors at Ericsson Stadium on Sunday, March 13 at noon Sydney time.
Club chairman Joe Cross flew in from a freezing business trip to New York this week to be back home for the trials and the start of the premiership.
